Answer in Guide Questions:

1. The potato strips with distilled water gain weight and they also become longer while the
potato strips that are placed in distilled water with salt lose weight and the length become
shorter. However, the lightest potato in this experiment that I did is the one that is placed in
distilled water with 20g salt.

2. In my opinion, changes happen in potatoes because of salt. The cells of potatoes contain
more salt and less water so for me, if you add more salt, the water in the potatoes will be
reduced even more because it will move out because of much salt and it results in lightening of
weight and shortening of length of potatoes.

3. This activity is used in osmosis experiments because this is an exact example of it. Osmosis
is a movement of solvent through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated
solution into a more concentrated one. Water represents the solvent in this experiment while the
semipermeable membrane is the potato (a living organism with a cell). Water will move from an
area of less salt to more salt therefore in my opinion, when you place the potato in salt water,
the water inside the potato will move out by osmosis so this is the reason why it loses weight
and why the length becomes shorter.
