WHAT IS AN ADJECTIVE?

Adjectives are words that describe or modify other words, making your writing
and speaking much more specific, and a whole lot more interesting. Words
like small, blue, and sharp are descriptive, and they are all examples of adjectives.
Because adjectives are used to identify or quantify individual people and unique
things, they are usually positioned before the noun or pronoun that they modify.
Some sentences contain multiple adjectives.
When it comes to function, adjectives are information gatherers. Specifically, they provide
further information about an object's size, shape, age, color, origin or material.
EXAMPLES OF ADJECTIVES
It's a big table. (size) It's a wooden table. (material)

It's a round table. (shape) It's a lovely table. (opinion)

It's an old table. (age) It's a broken table. (observation)

It's a brown table. (color) It's a coffee table. (purpose)

It's an English table. (origin)

ADJECTIVES USE CERTAIN SUFFIXES

-able/-ible: -al: Educational, -an:American, -ent:

Adorable, gradual, illegal, Indonesian, Intelligent, silent,
responsible nocturnal, viral Australian violent

-less: careless, -ic/-ical: athletic,

-ful: Harmful, -ive: informative,
endless, homeless, energetic, magical,
helpful, thoughtful native, talkative
timeless scientific
ASSIGNMENT

• Write a short essay in the DISCUSSION FORUM that contains some adjectives.You
can describe a person, your favorite food, favorite place, or favorite thing.You can also
talk about your past experience. Write the adjectives in BOLD, so your friends will learn
from your post and their vocabulary will increase because of your post.

EXAMPLE

• My favorite food is chicken fettuccini pasta. I prefer this dish because of the great taste.
It consists of a magnificent sauce, tender chicken, and mixed vegetables. This blend of
ingredients contributes the flavor, texture, and appearances of the pasta. Just because the
sauce isn’t an attractive color, which is an dull white with drops of grey from
mushrooms and specks of green from the broccoli .The creamy fettuccini sauce itself is
so tantalizing it’s truly what I call the cream of the crop. Added to the sauce is a
mixture of mozzarella, ricotta, and provolone cheese along with sauted mushrooms and
sun dried tomatoes.
EXAMPLE

• The place that I enjoy visiting is Prague. It’s the capital and largest city of the Czech
Republic. There is lots to do in Prague. It has several universities, so first and foremost it’s
a fantastic place to be a student. It’s fantastic, with a good nightlife, good restaurants
and a lively cultural life. If you climb up to the hill overlooking the old town, you have an
amazing view of the city. How has it changed since I first visited it? Well, I would say it
has undoubtedly become more trendy. They have built a stunning new museum.
Another example is “the Lennon Wall”, a monument of recent vintage: It is a wall covered
in graffiti and pictures inspired by John Lennon and the Beatles. People have been drawing
on the wall since the 1980s and they continue to do so today. I would say the local
inhabitants have become more proud of their city too.
