Are the leaders of our government show overconfidence in dealing with this

pandemic and how does the force of emotions affect their decision making?

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global health crisis of our time and the greatest challenge
that people have faced. It results to a large number of deaths in less than a year. This pandemic
not only considered as a health crisis but also an unusual socio-economic crisis. It has the
potential to create devastating social, economic and political effects that will leave a deep and
long-standing scar.

Overconfidence during this time can lead in a negative outcome, not only the health of
people is in danger but the whole life of the nation. I can say that our government is one of the
countries who show overconfidence in coping with this pandemic. Even that the government
implement a lockdown as early as March 16, still the government was not able to secure the
country from the virus. As at first, the President believes and say that this COVID-19 was
“nothing really to be scared of”, he made a late response on this issue, from the travel ban and
to acquiring protective, medical and sanitation equipment, it shows that the government is lack
of plan in resolving this cases, it is true that this COVID-19 is unexpected to come and an
invisible enemy but the government should able to make a good plan on how to resolve this
problem as soon as possible. Presidents overconfidence on the military to take course of action
rather than the health or medical experts is one of the things why the country is experiencing
this pandemic for a very long time. This virus is a health thing issue so it means that the real
experts on health is the one that must have control on the situation, but in our case the medical
experts and workers is the one who begging to the government to hear their voice and pay
attention on their request and recommendation in fighting the COVID-19. We can say that the
government also have fear of the spreading of this virus, and because of that fear and emotion
they decided to act like that. In this situation, government should rely on medical or scientific
and technical information to inform and legitimize their decisions, emotions are only part of the
policy process and used strategically to shape public policy responses and effects on society.

As of now Filipinos is under this Covid-19 pandemic for 7 months and people doesn’t
know when it really ends. We should still be thankful as we still alive, in this kind of situation
what we can only do is to follow the health protocols not only for ourselves but also to help the
health workers and to pray that it will end as soon as possible, to touch and guide the
government to response in this pandemic in a better way.
