1. Learning in High School was stressful and ritualistic.

2. Learning at Calvin is stressful, challenging, and engaging.

B.

The factors that contribute to a shift in learning from high school to Calvin are the
amount of information students must learn in a certain time and the types of
assessments given to students.

The rate at which we have to take in and learn information has increased
substantially. Therefore, students must adopt new methods of learning in order to be
able to keep up with the rigorous pace. For example, in high school, rote memorization
was enough to learn a little information for classes. And planning was not necessary in
order to get work done on time. Most students can procrastinate on a project or test
and still get it done on time. However, at Calvin, the large amount of information
requires that students plan and employ other methods to learn. Since we have to learn
so much information, study methods such as rote memorization will take much longer.
Moreover, after a certain amount of time our brain will no longer be able to take in and
hold any new information. In order to learn, students must break the time into smaller
20-30 minute chunks. Therefore, Calvin students must plan their study times
beforehand and exercise time management in order to keep up with the workload.

Not only is the rate at which we have to learn information increased, but the
depth of understanding assessed is increased as well. Most assessments in high
school mainly tested whether or not we have the information. In Calvin, a larger portion
of the test assesses our ability to make connections from the information to other
topics and areas of study. They also test our ability to synthesize new theses based off
of the information. Due to this difference in assessment, rote memorization is no longer
sufficient in order to perform well in the class. Reflective learning would be a better
method because, not only does it solidify our understanding of the information, but it
also helps us to connect the knowledge with topics we already know. When we reflect
on our notes and put them into our own words, we are forcing ourselves to find the main
message of the information, and having the main message is important for making
connections to other materials.

In closing, as students move from high school to Calvin University, there are
changes in the amount of information that students must learn and increases in the
depth of understanding assessed. In order to keep up with the workload and perform

well in classes, students must adopt new strategies of learning and develop and employ
their time management skills.
