Normal Distribution

Understanding the Normal

Distribution and the z-score
Aim for today:

Today, we will be able to define the properties of a normal

distribution and convert z-scores.
NORMAL PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION
Also known as the bell curve associated with its graph, is a probability distribution for a continuous
random variable X.

Properties of a Normal Probability Distribution

1. The normal probability distribution is bell-shaped.

2. The curve is symmetrical with respect to the mean.
3. The mean (𝑥)ҧ is equal to the median 𝑥෤ and is also
equal to the mode (𝑥).

4. The mean (𝜇) of the distribution is 0.
5. The spread of the curve depends on the standard
deviation of the distribution.
6. The tails of the curve flatten out indefinitely along
the horizontal axis.
7. The area under the curve is 1.

AREA UNDER THE CURVE
In identifying the area under the curve, use the z – table.

Example: Find the area between z = 0.15 and z = 1.08.

𝑧0.15 = 0.5596
1. Find the areas of z = 0.15 and z = 1.08 at the z – table. 𝑧1.08 = 0.8599

2. Subtract the smaller area to

the larger area.

𝑧1.08 − 𝑧0.15 = 0.8599 − 0.5596

𝑧1.08 − 𝑧0.15 = 0.3003

The area between z = 0.015 and

z = 1.08 is 0.3003.

AREA UNDER THE CURVE
Find the area of the following z – scores.

1. z = 2.5
2. z = -1.4
3. Between z = 1.2 and z = 2.8
4. Between z = -2.3 and z = -0.3
5. Between z = -2.6 and z = 2.2

CONVERTING RAW SCORE TO Z-SCORE
In converting a raw score (𝑥) to a z-score, we need to use the following formulas.
z – score for population data z – score for sample data
𝑥−𝜇 𝑥 − 𝑥ҧ
𝑧= 𝑧=
𝜎 𝑠
Legend: 𝑧 is the z-score; 𝑥 is the raw score; 𝜇 is the population mean; 𝜎 is the population standard deviation; 𝑥ҧ is the
sample mean; 𝑠 is the sample standard deviation
Sample Problem: The grade of Aura in Statistics and Probability is 82. If it is given that the pop. mean is 80
with standard deviation of 6, what is the corresponding z – score?
Step 1. Choose the right Step 2. Determine the value Step 3. Substitute the given Step 4. Compute for the

LET’S GO HIGHER
What z-scores bound the middle 95% of a normal distribution?

Step 1. Divide 95% by 2.

95% ÷ 2 = 0.4750

Step 2. Add the quotient to 0.5 to find the area bounding above the mean.
0.5 + 0.4750 = 0.9750

Step 3. Find the z-score corresponding to 0.9750.

𝑧1.96 = 0.9750

Step 4. Subtract the quotient in Step 1 to 0.5 to find the area bounding below the mean.
0.5 – 0.4750 = 0.0250

Step 5. Find the z-score corresponding to 0.0250.

𝑧−1.96 = 0.0250
