Evaluation INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT – ASSIGNMENT 1 (20 MARKS)
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This assignment addresses one (1) course outcome (CO) and one (1) programme outcome
(PO) which are mapped to complex engineering problem characteristics (WPs) and the
required knowledge profiles (WKs) as shown in Table 1.
WP6:
Extent of stakeholder involvement
and conflicting requirements –
diverse groups of stakeholders with
widely varying needs
1. A cylindrical crude oil tank is to be constructed to hold 30,000 m3 of sour crude. The
material for the sides of the tank can costs RM 0.40 per cm2. The material for the top and
bottom of the tank need to be thicker, and the cost is RM 0.50 per cm2. Determine the
dimensions for the tank that will minimize the construction cost of the tank.
2. There are three options of pipeline configurations to connect the oil well (Point A) to
Onshore Oil Terminal (OTT) (Point C) as shown in Figure 1. As a Facility Engineer, you
need to select the best configuration based on the minimum cost criteria. Propose the
pipeline configuration with the minimum construction.
Description: An offshore well (point A) located 6 km from the nearest shore (point B) is designed
to pump oil to the nearest onshore oil terminal (point C) located 8 km south from point B. Hence, an
oil pipeline is to be built from the well to onshore oil terminal at the following costs.
Pipeline Costs
4. A roller bearing is subject to fatigue failure caused by large contact loads. In order to find
the location of maximum stress, an engineer formulated the metal stress, f(x) as follows,
where x is the location in millimeter (mm). Determine the x that maximizes f(x).

5. It is estimated that the operating rate of a major manufacturer's factories over a certain
365-day period is given by
The assignment is evaluated based on the detailed rubric as shown in the appendix.
