Evaluation INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT – ASSIGNMENT 1 (20 MARKS)

1.0 INTRODUCTION

This assignment aimed to evaluate students’ understanding towards the fundamentals of

optimization and non-linear programming (NLP). It is also to assess students’ ability to perform
the following: problem formulation, defining design variable ang degree of freedom analysis.

2.0 COURSE AND PROGRAMME OUTCOMES WITH COMPLEX ENGINEERING

PROBLEMS & KNOWLEDGE PROFILE

This assignment addresses one (1) course outcome (CO) and one (1) programme outcome
(PO) which are mapped to complex engineering problem characteristics (WPs) and the
required knowledge profiles (WKs) as shown in Table 1.

3.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE ASSIGNMENT/PROJECT/DESIGN

At the end of this assignment, the students should be able to:

• Apply several tools of optimization methods
• Compare for best optimum solution in solving optimization problems.
4.0 QUESTIONS (PO4, CO2)

1. A cylindrical crude oil tank is to be constructed to hold 30,000 m3 of sour crude. The
material for the sides of the tank can costs RM 0.40 per cm2. The material for the top and
bottom of the tank need to be thicker, and the cost is RM 0.50 per cm2. Determine the
dimensions for the tank that will minimize the construction cost of the tank.

2. There are three options of pipeline configurations to connect the oil well (Point A) to
Onshore Oil Terminal (OTT) (Point C) as shown in Figure 1. As a Facility Engineer, you
need to select the best configuration based on the minimum cost criteria. Propose the
pipeline configuration with the minimum construction.

Description: An offshore well (point A) located 6 km from the nearest shore (point B) is designed
to pump oil to the nearest onshore oil terminal (point C) located 8 km south from point B. Hence, an
oil pipeline is to be built from the well to onshore oil terminal at the following costs.

Table 1 Pipeline construction costs

Pipeline Costs

Underwater pipeline RM 100,000/km

On land pipeline RM 75,000/km

Figure 1 Three options of pipeline configurations to connect the well to OOT

3. You are asked to design a covered conical burning pit to store 50 m3 of liquid waste.
Assume excavation costs at $100/ m3, side lining costs at $50/ m2 and the cover cost $70/
m2. Determine the dimensions of the pit that minimize cost if (a) the slope of pit is
unconstrained (b) the side slope must be less than 45o.

4. A roller bearing is subject to fatigue failure caused by large contact loads. In order to find
the location of maximum stress, an engineer formulated the metal stress, f(x) as follows,
where x is the location in millimeter (mm). Determine the x that maximizes f(x).

0.4 0.4
𝑓(𝑥) = − √1 + 𝑥 2 (1 − )+𝑥
√1 + 𝑥 2 1 + 𝑥2

5. It is estimated that the operating rate of a major manufacturer's factories over a certain
365-day period is given by

percent. Determine the day on which the operating rate is maximized.

5.0 YOUR TASK

1. Formulate the problems by defining design variables, objective function, and

constraints (if there is any).
2. Calculate or decide the optimum design variable and justify your answers.
