Credit Hours 3

Evaluation GROUP ASSIGNMENT

1.0 INTRODUCTION

In the past few decades, the petroleum business has transformed itself into a high-technology industry.
Dramatic advances in technology for exploration, drilling and completion, production, and site restoration
have enabled the industry to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for reliable supplies of oil and natural
gas at reasonable prices. The productivity gains and cost reduction attribute to extending the frontiers of
technology.

The early producers, relying on natural pressure and primitive pumps, recovered only about 10 percent of
the oil in a given field. They sometimes vented and flared natural gas produced in association with the oil.
Above and beyond the inflow performance of the oil and gas reservoirs, the advances in technology have
a major influence on the production capacity of oil and gas wells. The technologies are covered the
perforating, wellhead, and surface gathering systems as well as production enhancement. The application
of these technologies is focusing on the same objective which is to optimize the production as well as solve
the well production problems.

To increase the efficiency of well performance and select the right well stimulation method, it is necessary
to recognize the reason for the low production before will able to increase the well productivity by selecting
and applying the suitable well stimulation method to increase the well production of the wells.

3.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE ASSIGNMENT/PROJECT/DESIGN

At the end of this assignment, the students should be able to:

1. To identify the causes, occurrence, severity, and impacts of current issues/problems in petroleum
production engineering.
2. To identify the current prediction methods of the issues/problems and their management.
3. To compare & contrast the advanced technology available in solving the current issues/problems
in petroleum production engineering.
4. To describe the operating principles of the available technologies in solving the production
problems.

4.0 DESCRIPTION

The production of oil or gas from underground reservoirs involves chemical and mechanical processes that
affect the wellbore. Many of these processes can eventually cause a problem with the well, resulting in
either a decrease in production or failure of equipment installed downhole or at the surface. Most of the
serious problems can be avoided or delayed through preventive maintenance techniques or early
recognition from regular analysis of producing rates, fluids, and the mechanical condition of the well. Such
practices can prevent a costly workover required to restore production from the well and prevent total loss
of the wellbore.

Among the production problems are as follows:

1. Water-gas coning
2. Near wellbore restrictions
3. Partial penetration
4. Scales and precipitates
5. Paraffin or asphaltenes
6. Decrease in relative permeability
7. Emulsions
8. Formation collapse
9. Corrosion
10. Liquid loading
11. Mechanical failures

5.0 YOUR TASK

1. Form a group of 4 members

2. Select one topic of the below-listed technologies (first come first basis):
1. Multiphase flow metering
2. Downhole separators
3. Tubing conveyed perforating (TCP)
4. Matrix acidizing
5. Hydraulic fracturing
6. Sand control strategy
7. Floating production storage and offloading (FPSO)
8. Wax/ paraffin deposition: mitigation and removal techniques
9. Risks of gas hydrates in oil production systems

3. Form your group and let me know your group name (& team members) and your title via CGE659 group
Whatsapp.

or include relevant operating principles/ theories from handbooks:

a) Analyse the current issues/ problems with regards to your chosen topic (C4)
b) Discuss the current issues/ problems - definition, mechanisms, occurrence, severity, impact,
prediction of the occurrence & severity using software, current mitigation/management of the
issues, etc (C2)
c) Discuss the technology available in mitigating/minimizing/managing the issues/problems (C2)
d) Explain/illustrate the theories and operating principal of the technologies (C2)
e) Compare and contrast of the available technologies - pros, cons, in terms of complexity of the
