1. Explain your idea or interpretation in 10 sentences of this line from Dr. Jose
Rizal letter sent to his Portuguese friend. (50 points)
"Moreover, I wish to show those who deny us patriotism that we know how to die
for our duty and for our convictions. What matters death if one dies for what one
loves, for one’s country and for those whom he loves?"

Rizal wrote this letter knowing that when he returns to the Philippines that he
would die. He was prepared for death. He came back to the Philippines with the
intention of dying for his country. He would choose death so that his country the
Philippines can gain freedom. He was willing to die for his principles, values, and
to fight for what he believes in. Death is a great and wonderful thing, if it means
dying for something you love and cherish. Rizal knew that he was going to die but
he was okay with it, as long as his sacrifice was a way so that the Filipino can gain
liberty. He knew his death would strengthen the resolve of the Filipino people
fighting for his country. His death was one of the reasons why the revolution was
filled with renewed vigor and took up arms against the Spanish Rule. With his
death, his country the Philippines gained its freedom.

2. Describe the family of Rizal as a Social Institution. How did Jose Rizal’s
parents raise their children? (10 points).

Rizal’s parents were very supportive of him. His father according to Rizal was
a model father who gave them a good and stable life. His mother Teodora
Alonso was especially supportive of him. His mother was his first teacher. She
taught him how to read and value reading. Rizal’s parents definitely molded
him in becoming who he was. His mother was the one who opened his eyes to
the injustice Filipinos faced in the hands of the Spanish. Rizal realized the
unfairness of it all and so that was how he was influenced in becoming a
political activist and became a patriot.
