Week 1 Evaluation

1. Why is STS called ‘Science, Technology and Society’, and not ‘Science, Technology and
Sociology?
 Because sociology is the study of human social relationship. Technology is the
product of science where the society is the main beneficiary of technology.
Because of science, a lot of discoveries and inventions are arising and with the
help of technology, the life of the society is easier.

2. From the table list that you created in Activity, how does each invention/discovery on
your list qualify to be relevant to your course?
 1. Paper – paper is relevant to my course because when we are given activity,
paper is the most common thing that they want us to use specially when we are
journalizing transactions
 2. Computer – this is relevant to my course because it helps us to journalize
transactions in a much easier way.
 3. Programmable Computer – this invention helps us to install important
applications where we can use like installing applications that give us the benefit
of recording transactions and invoices.
 4. Typewriters – it is also relevant to my course because we can’t type anything in
the computers without it.
 5. Computer Memory – it is relevant to my course because it can help us store
data and files which are in the computer. It will serve as the storage for the files to
be kept in the computer.
 6. Computer Mouse – no one can use the computer without a mouse because
computer has no feature like what laptop has. It is relevant to my course because
when we will be using computers, it can help us click the things that we want to
open in the computer like files and some data.
 7. Computer Networks: Internet – it is beneficial to my course because it can help
us explore things and use some websites that is relevant to what we do as an
Accountancy student like for example the website Xero. With internet, we can
access this website and practice our skills regarding our dream profession.
 8. Flash Memory – it is relevant to my course because whenever we enter data in
a system or in a computer, it can store the information, files and data even when
the power is off.
 9. World Wide Web – it is beneficial to my course because it is an information
system where documents and other web resources are identified which may be
interlinked by hypertext, and are accessible over the Internet. It can also give us
access to the Xero application online.
 10. BitTorrent – it is a communication protocol for peer-to-peer file sharing,
which enables users to distribute data and electronic files over the Internet in a
decentralized manner. With this, we can easily share and distribute files to our
fellow Accountancy students wherein we can also help them in this manner.
 11. Quantum Computers – it is also relevant to my course because it can help us
compute faster and it will be a less stress for us in computing larger numbers. It is
the use of quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement to
perform computation.

3. Did this pandemic (COVID-19) cause a paradigm shift? Explain in the perspective of
science, technology and society.
 Yes. Since technology is the product of science where society benefits from it,
this pandemic caused a major change in the concepts and practices of how
something works or is accomplished. A lot of things now are done through the use
of online platforms. The best example that I can say is this flexible learning. This
is the major change on how the student study from face-to-face to online classes.
In the perspective of STS, the what we use like laptop, internet and online
platforms are examples of technology that serves as the product of science where
we, the students benefit from it.
