AUDIOSCRIPTS
Unit 1
Sarah: John, I've never met your family. Do you have a big family?
John: Yeah, kind of. There are five people in my family, so it's a medium family. I have two brothers, so
there are three boys in my family. And there's my mother and my father.
Sarah: How about your father? Do you look like him?
John: Yes, I do. I do look like my father. When he was younger. He had blond hair like me and he has
glasses. So do I. My mother has glasses, too. I'm the same height as my father. We are both 180
centimeters tall. My older brother is the same height as me and my father. But my younger brother is
shorter than us.
Sarah: Ah.
John: He has blond hair and glasses too, though.
Sarah: Oh. How tall is your younger brother?
John: He's a bit shorter than us. I am not sure but I think he's around 170 centimeters tall.
Sarah: Oh. How about your mom?
John: My mom is short, too. She's the same height as my younger brother.
Sarah: Oh.
John: And my mom has red hair. Her hair is bright red, so my mother has different hair from the rest of my
family. There are four people with blond people with blond hair and one person with red hair. But actually,
all five of us wear glasses.
Sarah: Oh really?
John: Yeah.
Sarah: So John, you're thin. What about the rest of your family? Are they thin, too?
John: Well, my mother is skinny, too, like me. But my brothers are more like my dad in their body type.
They are a little bit more muscular than me. They have big muscles and they're very strong. So they are
heavier than me. That's my father. He weighs more than I do. And my brothers are also heavier than me.
Sarah: Oh, sounds like a good-looking family.
John: Thank you.
Sarah: So John, you told me about me about your family's appearance. What about their personality?
John: Well, all five people in my family have different personalities.
Yeah. My younger brother is really fun. It's great to spend time with him. For example, we usually play
video games together. He likes to play racing games or sports games, and also, we play card games or just
watching TV. He's so funny.
67
No matter what we're doing, he tells jokes and I love listening to him tell jokes about whatever we're doing
at the time. And he's so cheerful and bright. He's always open to new people and new ideas. So I really like
spending time with him. He makes me feel cheerful, too when we talk together.
Sarah: That's great. How about your older brother?
John: Well, my older brother, he's a really good guy. He's not so entertaining like my younger brother but
he's very smart. He's really serious. He likes to study and read. For example, he likes reading the Greek
philosophers. He likes reading about Plato and Socrates. And he's always talking about philosophy. I like
that stuff, too. I think it's interesting but he's not very funny.
Sarah: I see. How about your dad?
John: My dad. Let's see, what can I say about my dad's personality? He's a hard worker. He's very devoted
to everything he tries. He was raised on a farm so he knows a lot about animals. And now, he has a farm
as a hobby. My dad raises horses and chickens. He loves animals and he has so many animals but he doesn't
think of them as farm animals, they're his pets and he loves them.
He spends everyday outside where no matter what the weather, because he has to take care of his family,
which is all of his animals. And he's a really smart guy. Maybe a bit serious at times. His sense of humor is
maybe like you can imagine from an old man.
Sarah: I see. How about your mother? What's she like?
John: My mother loves to read horror novels.
Sarah: Really?
John: Yeah, horror books. So she knows a lot of stuff about crime or mysteries or police dramas and
lawyers. She loves that stuff. So my mother is very interested in those kind of books and movies and TV
shows, too. So she's kind of like a detective. My mother is very smart and enjoys solving puzzles.
Sarah: Wow. It sounds like an interesting family.
Unit 2
A
I work on Saturdays and in the school holidays. Saturdays are busy because that’s when everyone goes
shopping. Our shop sells clothes and accessories for men, women and children. I work in the children’s
department. It can be crazy sometimes, but it’s fun.
B
I work during my summer holidays when I’m not at university. Oxford has thousands of tourists in the
summer, so it’s easy to find a job as a tour guide. I take tourists to visit the university colleges and then we
go down to the river. We go along the river on a boat. The tourists love the boat trip, but last summer one
tourist fell in the river! I love meeting people from all over the world.
C
I like my job, but lots of people don’t like coming to see me because they hate dentists. Sometimes it’s
very hard work, but it’s great to help people when they have a problem. It’s so important to look after
your teeth.
D
My job is very difficult, but I like it because I love flying. I fly planes that take people to different places on
68
holiday. Most of the time I fly in Europe to places like Spain, Greece and Italy. The most difficult thing
about my job is when the weather is bad. Snow and thunderstorms are the worst. The best thing is visiting
different places.
E
I work in a hospital in the city centre. It’s a very big hospital. I help the doctors with the patients. I give
them their medicine and look after them when they feel ill. I love my job but I don’t like the uniform and
sometimes I have to work at night.
Unit 3
Sarah: John, tell me about your day. What time do you wake-up?
John: Well, let's see. Some days I wake up early. Maybe about 6 o'clock. Yeah, sometimes I wake up at 6
o'clock.
When I get up early, I like to get ready for the day, take a shower and have breakfast. But other days,
I don't like getting up early. Maybe I'll sleep in until 10:00 or 11:00.
Sarah: Wow.
John: Yeah. I like sleeping in late. So sometimes, I wake up at 11:00. On those days, if I know I won't wake
up until 11:00, I'll take a shower the night before, before I go to bed. How about you, Sarah? When do you
usually wake up?
John: 8:00.
Sarah: 8:00. And I always do the same thing. First, I make coffee right away. Then I wake up my kids and
we have breakfast together at about 8:30.
John: Really?
Sarah: Yes. We usually have something easy like bread and yogurt and fruit.
John: I like to have coffee every morning whether I wake up at 6:00 or at 10:00. I'm still going to have
coffee. But I often skip breakfast. Do you always eat breakfast everyday?
Sarah: Yes. If I don't eat breakfast, I'm so hungry. What about lunch? What time do you have lunch?
John: Lunch is the same everyday for me. I always eat lunch at 12:30 PM. So whenever I wake up, I do
some things and then I always have lunch at 12:30 PM, just half past noon. And I always have a simple
lunch. Maybe some soup or spaghetti or a sandwich. Something light, and it's always at half past noon.
What time do you eat lunch?
69
Sarah: That's interesting. I have breakfast at the same time everyday but lunch is always at a different
time.
John: Really?
Sarah: Because I'm busy in the morning. I go out, maybe I go shopping. Sometimes, I clean the house. So I
might have lunch at 11 o'clock or 12 o'clock. Sometimes as late as 2:30.
Sarah: Yes. But it's always easy lunch like you. Maybe crackers and cheese or a sandwich or a baked potato.
John: I see.
Unit 4
Todd: Hey, Meg. We are talking about traveling and visiting other countries. What countries have you
traveled to?
Meg: I've been to quite a few different countries, for example, Spain, Belize and Indonesia.
70
Todd: So what about Belize? Belize is a really small country.
Meg: Belize is very small, but it's also hot similar to Spain in the summer.
Todd: Why did you go to Belize?
Meg: I went to Belize on a study trip for school, and I stayed there for about two weeks.
Todd: Okay. Now, does Belize have good food?
Meg: Belize also has good food. There was a family that cooked for us, and we had a lot of delicious almost
Mexican type food.
Todd: Oh really? So for example, what do you eat? Like, what do people eat in Belize?
Meg: People eat – it's kind of like a taco but flat with a tortilla, and some meat and vegetables on top and
some spices that make it really delicious.
Todd: So the last country is Indonesia. When did you go to Indonesia?
Meg: I actually went to Indonesia just last year.
Todd: Oh wow. How long did you stay?
Meg: I only stayed there for about a week.
Todd: Oh yeah? Oh, short trip.
Meg: Yeah, it was a short trip, but I was just visiting some friends there.
Todd: Where did you go?
Meg: I went to Jakarta and Bali.
Todd: Oh, okay. So I hear Bali has really beautiful beaches. Is it true?
Meg: Yeah, it's true. There are a lot of famous and beautiful beaches in Bali.
Todd: Oh, did you surf in Bali?
Meg: I've never surfed before. Usually, when I went to the beach, I just wanted to put my feet in the water.
Todd: Oh yeah. Now, Bali also has very famous scenery on the inside like the rice fields. Did you see the
rice fields of Bali?
Meg: No, I didn't see the rice fields. But I did go to some famous historical spots.
Todd: So of the three countries – Spain, Belize and Indonesia – what country was your favorite?
Meg: Maybe Spain was my favorite because I love learning language, and it was really nice to stay with my
Spanish family.
Todd: Yeah. I could see that. I really want to go to Spain, and I hope to go soon.
Meg: I hope you can go too. It's beautiful.
Unit 5
Many people like to collect things. They collect all kinds of things, from comic books to teacups to
cars. Why do they do it? Most collectors will tell you, "Because it's fun." Some say, "I hope to make some
money."
Other people may laugh and say, "Collecting? No, that's not for me! I'm not a collector." Is that
really true? Many of us collect things without thinking about it.
Small children do not think about it, but they are natural collectors. They pick up little things they
see. For example, a little boy finds a nice stone or a shell. Then he finds some more. He takes them home,
and he has the start of a collection.
71
Older children collect things, too-teddy bears, for example. Some collect trading cards with
pictures of their favorite athletes. Many enjoy collecting the same things as their friends. When they get
something new, they tell their friends about it and show them. These children enjoy playing with their
things together.
Men and women may collect things that make them remember being children. Jared Millen of
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, collects lunch boxes. When he was a child, he always carried a lunch box to school.
Now he has more than 300 of them. Some people will pay a lot for an old lunch box.In 2005, a 1954
Superman lunch box sold on eBay for more than $4,000.
Are you a collector? Maybe your answer at first is no, but think again. Maybe you have a lot of
photos, music, T-shirts, or earrings. Then you are a collector, too.
Unit 6
A (boy)
My favorite thing has to be my new tablet. It’s really light and quite small, so I take it with me
everywhere.I’m always writing messages to friends and it’s big enough to do college work on it too. It takes
really good photos, and I play games and listen to music on it as well, of course. I often download films
onto it and watch them in bed. My mum says I’m addicted, because I’m always on it. I even read things on
it at breakfast time. I’m not allowed to at dinner time, though. I have to be polite and talk to people
then.“Welcome back to real life," my mum says.
B (girl)
My favorite thing? Does my cat count as a thing? She’s not really a thing, but anyway. She’s a really
beautiful little cat. I’ve had her since she was four months old. You know how some cats are really
Independent and hardly talk to you? I know cats don’t really talk, but you know what I mean. Well, she’s
not like that at all. She’s really affectionate and comes up to me as soon as I get home, purring away like
mad.She makes a lot of noise for a tiny thing. She loves being stroked and comes and curls up next to me
when I’m on the sofa. She’s great company.
C (boy)
My new scooter! It’s quite small, but fun, and just what I needed for getting around the city. I used to have
quite a long walk to the metro, then a longish walk at the other end to get to college. But now I can just
whiz there on my scooter. And there’s no problem parking, there’s always space for it. You have to be
careful with the cars and lorries – they don’t always see you – and when it rains the surface of the road is
terrible, it gets really slippery. But in general it’s perfect for me, and I can fit a friend on the back too – I’ve
got an extra helmet for a friend. It’s great. Riding along makes me feel so free.
D (girl)
This might sound a bit old-fashioned, but my sewing machine is my favorite thing. I’m studying fashion and
love making things, as well as designing them. I also love clothes myself and often buy second-hand clothes
– everyone loves the “vintage” look at the moment – and then I adapt them to my size. It’s much easier
using a machine to do that than doing it by hand. I do alterations for my mum and my sister too. If I don’t
make it as a designer, I suppose I can always set up my own alterations and customizing
business.Customizing clothes, by taking things off and adding things on, is actually very creative, so I
wouldn’t mind that.
72
Unit 7
A new report describes life in 100 years. There are many tall skyscrapers, underwater cities, and holidays
in space. Experts on space and architecture gave their ideas on life in 2116. They said the way we live,
work and play will be totally different. They said that 25 years ago, people could not imagine how the
Internet would change our lives and how we communicate and learn. The changes in the next century will
be more unbelievable.
People gave their predictions about the future. They said we will work from home and have online
meetings. We will download a design for furniture or a food recipe and then 'print' the sofa or pizza on our
3D printer. Our home health system will tell us what treatment we need for health problems. We will also
take holidays in space and get resources from space. No one said whether people will need to study
English.
Unit 8
1. Daughter: Mom, do you think it’s going to be rainy tonight?
Mom: Yes, sweety. I think, it will because there is thunder and lightening. What do you think honey?
Father: Well, I guess so because it was foggy this morning and it’s humid.
News reporter: Good evening. Welcome to the World Weather Forecast. Let’s take a look at the weather
now. It is cold and snowy today in northern Canada. People are staying in their homes for a long winter’s
day. While in South America, the weather is hot and sunny. Everybody is enjoying their summer holidays.
In some parts of Europe, the temperature is cool. It will be very windy. It’s like fall. But today in Asia, the
weather is cloudy and warm. Everybody wants spring. Tonight in America, the weather is overcast and rain
is possible. And that’s the World Weather Forecast for tonight. Bryan Landers reporting.
73
Weather reporter: Welcome to the weather forecast. Now, let’s see what the weather is like today. In the
north of the country it’s very windy and cold. There is a chance of some rain too, so don’t leave home
without your umbrella! The temperature is around 10 degrees centigrade. In the east it’s rainy all day
today, I’m afraid. There may be a thunderstorm in the afternoon. The temperature is a bit higher, at around
13 degrees, In the west and middle of the country the weather is dry, but cloudy. So no rain for you, but
it is quite windy and the temperature is just 10 degrees. The south of the country has the best weather
today. It’s cloudy most of the time but sunny this afternoon. The temperature is around 15 degrees.
Unit 9
Henrietta: Hey Alan, is that you?
Alan: Oh, hi Henrietta. What a surprise to see you! Are you going to work?
Alan: I'm finishing my vacation. Today's my last day. I went all over Europe. Twenty-four days, seven
countries.
Henrietta: That sounds incredible! Tell me all about it. I really want to see the rest of Europe.
Alan: We went to college together. I stayed in Amsterdam for three days. The weather was rainy and windy
and really cold, but I had a great time. It's a very cosmopolitan, international city.
Henrietta: What did you do there? Did you see all the canals?
Alan: Yes, they were so beautiful. We also visited two huge art galleries. They had exhibitions of the old
Dutch painters like Vermeer and Rembrandt. After leaving Amsterdam, I spent some time in Brussels with
Rita and then I went to Munich.
Alan: It's a very interesting place. Very historical. I visited one house in Munich that was 800 years old. It
was incredible.
Alan: It was a very clean house too! The weather in Munich was warm so I was happy. I took so many
photos of the city.
74
Alan: No, not really. I had a very good guide book with me, very informative. And it had information about
all the good, cheap places. In Munich, I stayed in a hostel for about 20 euros a night.
Henrietta: Wow, that is cheap! What did you eat in Germany? I hear the food is delicious.
Alan: They have these huge sausages and you eat them with a long piece of bread - very tasty.
Alan: Yes, after a few days in Munich, I caught the train south to Italy and stayed two days in Milan.
Henrietta: You really saw everything. I'm so jealous. I was here in London in the rain!
Alan: Oh, what a pity! This is my station. I have so many things to tell you. Listen, tonight I'll phone you.
Henrietta: Great, and this weekend, we can go out and eat German sausage!
Unit 10
We all had friends who were good and bad to us from time to time. Do you ever wonder what makes a
friend good or bad? We listed 5 signs to look for in a friend to decide if they are good or bad. First of all,
good friends are honest and reliable, you can trust them and you know that they will keep your secrets. A
bad friend on the other hand may talk behind your back and you will never be sure about them. Secondly,
good friends are happy for you when you succeed while a bad friend is jealous and instead of encouraging
you they either discourage you or make fun of your achievements. Third, a good friend is there for you in
hard times, they listen and comfort you; they make you feel better and help you when you are in need.
However, a bad friend calls you only when they need something, and they usually try to use you. The
fourth sign to look for in a good friend is whether they have positive or negative influences on you. A good
friend teaches you to do the right and warns you when you don’t, while a bad friend may cause you to fall
into bad habits like smoking. Finally, a good friend always supports you and loves you and makes you happy
no matter what you do, while a bad friend only cares about himself/herself.
Unit 11
Meg: Hey, Todd. Are you healthy? Do you eat lots of fruits and vegetables?
Todd: I guess I am healthy. I do eat lots of fruits and vegetables, but I also eat junk food, sadly. But I try to
eat lots of fruits especially to stay healthy.
Todd: Well, I like all fruits. I love all fruits except pineapple. I hate pineapple. I don't know why. I just don't
like pineapple. I don't like the taste. I don't like to chew it. It just feels funny. But I love apples, I love
75
bananas, I love oranges. I usually have an apple every morning for breakfast. It's very easy to eat. And I
just love apples because you can take them to school. You can eat them quickly. They're very easy to eat.
I also like oranges, and I love orange juice. So sometimes, I make fresh orange juice in my kitchen. So
oranges are great. But my favorite fruits are bananas and strawberries. I love bananas and strawberries.
And I love to eat bananas and strawberries together, so my favorite snack is to cut up some banana and
then cut up some strawberry and mix them together, and then eat them.
Todd: I do. I try to have a salad everyday, and I have a special salad I make and I call it my chunky, crunchy
salad. And it's carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes, and I cut the carrots and cucumbers into small little
squares. And then I cut up the tomatoes and I mix together. And the carrots, tomatoes and cucumbers
mixed together, the colors are really pretty. And when you eat the salad, it's very crunchy and it's very
chunky because it's all little squares. So I call it my crunchy, chunky salad.
Meg: That sounds delicious. Do you ever share it with someone else?
Todd: No, I don't but I want to because I really, I like it so much and I can't cook. So when I go to somebody's
house and I need to bring food, I think, "Oh, I should bring chunky, crunchy salad."
Meg: Hmm, that's a good idea. Another idea is to cook some vegetables. Do you cook vegetables?
Todd: Not too much. I do cook asparagus. Asparagus is probably my favorite vegetable, and it's very easy
to cook because asparagus, you just have to cut up into small pieces. And then you can put the asparagus
in a bowl with some water in the microwave, and you can cook asparagus in about 30 seconds. So I eat
asparagus a lot.
Also, I eat broccoli. I love broccoli. Sometimes I have broccoli and lettuce together for my salad. And then
sometimes, I cook eggplant. I like to cook eggplant because I like the taste and it's easy to cook.
Todd: Really?
Meg: I don't.
76
Meg: It has a strange flavor to me, so I prefer not to eat eggplant.
Meg: Yes.
Unit 12
DIALOGUE 1
Steve : I am not very good at using a computer, is it hard to buy things online?
Girl: It is really easy, all you do is go to the website and choose the item you want to look at. There are so
many items to choose from on the website. After you choose what you want to buy, you click on the
checkout button.
Girl: Yes it is. It only takes about a week for your item to come. Of course if you are in a hurry, you can pay
more to get it sent faster.
Girl: No, you have to pay for it online with a credit card.
DIALOGUE 2
Man: How are you going to do that? We are in the middle of the freeway.
Woman: Now you can also use a cellphone to send and receive short text messages. It is very useful.
77
Woman: I just use the keys on the phone to type a short message, then I press the send button, It is
cheaper than making a phone call.
Man: That is a great idea, you can save both time and money that way.
Man: Thanks for telling me about this. I will have to try it.
Unit 13
Neil: Hello, welcome to 6 Minute English. I'm Neil…
Neil: Now Harry, have you ever taken a 'selfie' – that's a photo of yourself, usually with your mobile phone?
Harry: Yes, I have. I've taken them all over London with my children – of course selfies are very easy to
take with your smartphone and recently we've seen some famous selfies featuring well-known people
such as the one taken by actor, Ellen DeGeneres at last year's Oscars ceremony.
Neil: Yes, it seems that there are no limits to the places where you can capture yourself in a photo. But
there is a limit on how far you can stretch your arm out and take a snap – a quick photo – of you and your
friends.
Harry: That's true, so thank goodness for the selfie stick – an expanding pole to put your smartphone on
which gives you a wider view. This means you can take in more of the background. Sounds like a good idea.
Neil: It does, but it's also causing a problem in some places around the world. More on that in a moment
but let's not forget I have a question to ask you Harry.
Harry: OK Neil.
Neil: Well, we know some people love to take photos of themselves but perhaps not as much as Patrick
Peterson. According to Guinness World Records he has taken the most 'selfies' in one hour – but do you
know how many? Is it:
a) 449
b) 1,449
c) 2,449
78
Harry: Well, I guess he's gotta move and be in a different position so I'm not going to go for the highest
one. I'm gonna say1,449.
Neil: OK, well, we'll find out the answer at the end of the programme. But now let's talk more about the
dangers of the selfie stick! They can certainly be useful for taking photos from a different viewpoint and it
does mean that you get more people in your photo.
Harry: Sales of the selfie stick have soared – or risen quickly - since last year and they are now a common
sight at tourist destinations. They're great if you want to take a better photo but they're very annoying if
you're not involved with the photo.
Neil: Yes and this is particularly frustrating if you're trying to look at paintings and sculptures at an art
gallery. They just get in the way and can be very distracting.
Harry: You mean they stop someone giving their full attention to what they are looking at. Well, this is the
reason that some famous art galleries around the world are putting a ban on selfie-sticks – a ban means
they are no longer allowed.
Neil: Places such as the Smithsonian museums in Washington and the Palace of Versailles in Paris were
the first to do this and now the National Gallery in London have stopped them being used.
Harry: Let's hear the exact reasons why from the gallery's Doctor Susan Foister. What phrase does she use
to mean trying to do the best thing for the visitors and for the paintings themselves?
We have over 6 million visitors a year here, some of our rooms could get quite crowded, so we have to
find the right balance between the experience of our visitors close to the paintings and the safety of the
paintings themselves.
Neil: So the National Gallery is a popular and busy place and it gets quite crowded – and it doesn't help
the problem if people are holding up selfie sticks!
Harry: Yes – so they have imposed – or brought in – this ban to do the best thing for the visitors and for
the paintings themselves – it's what Doctor Foister called 'the right balance'. She wants to give visitors
trying to get close to the paintings a good experience.
Neil: And she makes the point that there's a risk that the painting, which can be worth millions of pounds,
could be damaged by one of these sticks.
Harry: Of course you are still allowed to take a selfie, and some museums are 'sticking their neck out' and
still allowing people to use them.
79
Neil: A good idiom there Harry – you mean they're doing something that other people may not like – yes,
places such as the ICA – that's the Institute for Contemporary Art – in London say selfie sticks are part of
modern-day life.
Harry: Here is Catherine Stout, Head of Programmes at the ICA. How does she describe the type of visitors
who go to her gallery?
We are very happy for our visitors to take their own photographs for personal use, of course we always
secure the artist's permission, but actually because we have a very young audience they're completely
engaged with social media, they want to use that forum to connect with each other, to share their
experiences, if they wish to use a stick they're very welcome to do so as long as, obviously, the artwork is
not damaged in any way.
Neil: So the people who visit that gallery are young and use social media a lot – they are 'engaged' with it
and they like to share their experiences. This means taking photos on their smartphones and if they want
to use a selfie stick?
Harry: … then they are 'welcome to do so'. Just watch out where you stick it! I suppose, as long as you
respect other visitors and don't get in the way, then it's ok to use one.
Neil: Well I'm not so sure. Anyway, it's time to reveal the answer to the question I asked you earlier.
Harry: Yes, this was about Patrick Peterson, who holds the record for taking the most selfies in one hour.
You asked me if he took 449, 1,449 or 2,449 in one hour.
Neil: And you said 1,449, which was … the correct answer! I wonder what he did with all those images…
Neil: Well we need to 'stick' to our six minutes of English but just before we run out of time, could you
remind us of some of the vocabulary we've used today Harry?
Neil: Thank you. Well, that's it for now. Go to bbclearningenglish.com to find more 6 Minute English
programmes. Until next time. Goodbye!
Harry: Bye!

Unit 14
John: Ah, good morning, Pia Marcotti, isn't it?
John: Oh, I'm John Reeves. I manage the sales department here at Rosco International. You can call me
John.
Pia: Ok John.
Pia: Yes, I got here at 9am and Suzy gave me a tour of the place.
John: Yes, a lot of people say that. Now we have over fifty people working for us here. Did you bring your
CV?
John: Oh yes, of course. I was reading it only yesterday. Now, where is it....ah, here it is, here we are. Pia
Marcotti, 26 years old, born in Rome...hmmm...ok, let's see. Where did you hear about Rosco
International?
Pia: My brother worked for you a couple of years ago and has always spoken well of you.
John: Luigi Marcotti, yes I remember him. How long did he work here for?
Pia: I think it was about 10 months. Now he's living in the UK. He's been working for a magazine in London
for around a year.
Pia: Well, I worked in the offices of my mother's company when I left university.
Pia: It's a caterers. She does the catering for weddings, graduations, funerals, that type of thing.
81
John: And how long did you work there for?
Pia: About a year or so. They put me on the phones and I was also responsible for all the advertising and
our leaflets, business cards and the website.
Pia: Well, I traveled for a little while, mostly in Europe and a little in South America.
Pia: Oh, it wasn't too long. Maybe about six months. I had a job that was going to start at the end of the
year so I had about six months free, so I thought "why not?".
John: Did you have any problems with the languages where you went?
John: Oh yes, it's written here on your resume, isn't it? How long have you been studying those languages?
Pia: Well, my father is Italian, so I am fluent in Italian. I have studied Spanish for about seven years so I can
get by pretty well in that too.
John: Actually, we do have a lot of business with Sicily so your Italian could be really important.
Pia: I would really like the chance to use my Italian for work.
John: What did you do when you came back from your travels?
Pia: Well, as I said before, I already had another job lined up and that was in a small shoe company just
outside town.
John: Ah yes, here it is. It says here you worked in their sales department. How long did you do that for?
Pia: I was there for three years and I worked in the sales department for two of those three years.
82
Pia: Well, it was fun at the beginning, but it's not a very large company and they only have a few customers
in the region, so it got pretty repetitive after a while. That's why working for an international company like
yourselves would really interest me.
John: OK, let's go and get a cup of coffee and we can continue this conversation afterwards.
Unit 15
I want to explain a few things about your essay.
First of all, the deadline. The deadline for this essay is October the 18th. Not the 19th, not the 28th, not
two days later because your dog was ill or your computer broke – the 18th. If it's late, I won't mark it. I
won't even read it – you'll fail the assignment! So, please hand it in on time. You can even hand it in early,
if you like!
You can email me the essays at j.hartshorn@lmu.ac.uk. That's H-A-R-T-S-H-O-R-N. I'll reply to say I've got
it. If I don't reply within a day, it might mean I didn't get it, so please email me again to make sure. You can
also bring a paper copy of the essay to my office, but let's be kind to the trees, OK? Email is better for the
trees and for me.
Don't forget that you must reference every idea or quote you use that isn't your own idea. And the last
page of your essay should be a list of all the books you used, in alphabetical order, not in the order you
used them!
And lastly, make it easy for me to read! That means use a clear font. Arial is best, but Times New Roman
is fine too. Not Comic Sans please! Size 12 font for the essay, and size 14 for the titles and subheadings.
And use page numbers. Any questions?
Unit 16
Nada: And now let’s talk to our sports correspondent, Omar Sabban, in Athens. Hello, Omar.
Omar: Hello, Nada. Well, the 2004 Olympic Games here in Athens was a wonderful event. Over 11,000
athletes from 202 countries came here for the seventeen days of competition. And it was a truly global
sporting event. An incredible four billion people around the world watched the Olympic Games on TV.
Nada: That’s an amazing figure. Which country won the most gold medals?
Omar: It was a very close competition this year. The USA got 35 gold medals, but China was very strong
and won 32 gold medals. And Russia got an impressive 27 gold medals.
Nada: What were the best moments of the games for you?
Omar: I think there were three. The first was the Olympic torch relay before the games started. The
Olympic flame visited all five continents. 3,600 people carried the flame round the world outside Greece.
The Olympic torch travelled 78,000 kilometres and the journey took 78 days.
Nada: And what was the second?
Omar: That was the opening ceremony. Each country’s athletes walked round the stadium with their
national flag and music. It was really beautiful.
Nada: And the third?
Omar: Well, it was the closing ceremony. At the end of the games, all the athletes came into the stadium
together. But this time they didn’t represent their countries, they represented humanity.
Nada: Thank you, Omar. And enjoy your last day in Athens!
