Cleaning
The metal surface and the adjacent coating must first be cleaned.
The ideal method is shot- or grit-blasting, which provides a defined surface
roughness and the required standard of cleaning. In some cases, cleaning with
a hand wire brush is sufficient. When using a motor-powered wire brush, care
should be taken that the surface is not polished smooth. Preparation of the pipe
ends varies, depending on the type of mill coating. On a two-layer PE system
there is often a temporary end protection, which needs to be removed. The
epoxy layer of a three-layer system can remain in place.
8.4. Preheating
The pipes must be preheated in accordance with the installation instructions of
the products concerned. In most cases preheating with a gas torch flame is
sufficient. Inductive Heating is also effective, though normally not required.
® Mechanical resistance Depending on the mechanical requirements of the local or project specification,
class the appropriate sleeve construction (thickness) is selected. Raychem's standard
product matrix copes with all international standards. For special conditions a
customized sleeve construction can be produced.
-, . - .
All of the above parameters influence the type of heat-shrinkable sleeve
required to provide the best performance, ease of installation and value.
The following guidelines will help you to decide which sleeve is right for
r your application.

Pipe surface preparation Before pipe is either shot or gritblasted, all dirt, loose corrosion or other foreign
material must be removed by wire brush or other means.
Pipe should be preheated to approximately 35°C to 40°C (95°F to 104°F) before
shot- or grit- blasting to dry the pipe and remove moisture.
Normal practice for obtaining the desired cleaning level, SA 2.5, Ra max. 5011
profile, is to use a high speed wheels shot blast equipment, using a combination
of steel shot and grit to produce the desired surface. Conventional air operated
sand blast equipment will produce an acceptable cleaning level using the appro-
priate mesh cleaning media to meet the profile requirements. It should be noted
that sand blasting will give a much lower rate of cleaning compared to shoUgrit
blasting.
Pipe surface must be clean from dust and must be inspected for steel sliver,
other type of defects or contamination that could effect coating quality.
Blasted and cleaned pipe shall be coated within 6 hours after cleaning. If at any
time surface rust develops, pipe must be blasted again.

Long-Line flexible Anode for Impressed Current Cathodic
Protection ANODEFLEX 1500-01
Note
- Similar component versions also exist including a screw connector and
cleaning tissue. Add -C to the part number.

Technical Specification RUD 6077 or contact your local sales engineer.
Like any cathodic protection system, the Raychem Anodeflex system must be optimized for particular design conditions.
Severe environments may limit the lifetime. Anodeflex is a flexible carbon cable anode system. When a/l the active anode
material available around the polymeric cable is consumed. the anode will no longer function . Tyco Adhesives warrants that
Anodeflex meets the internal Tyco Adhesives specification, but the purchaser must rely on its own engineering experience
judgment and skill to ascertain whether or not Anodeflex is fit for the parffcular purpose proposed by the purchaser.
