1.1 Scope
This procedure is established for the measurement of ferrite content in weldments of

austenitic and duplex stainless steel. This procedure sets forth the minimum requirements to

be observed for ferrite measurement by using Fisher Instrument’s model FERITSCOPE FMP30.

2.0 References

Weld Metal.

3.0 Personnel Qualification

Personnel carrying out ferrite content measurement shall be

 Trained, experienced and competent to use the equipment

 Ability to recognize the equipment limitation in terms of material, surface profile and
working conditions.

 Ability to interpret the test result and recognize erroneous readings

4.0 Equipment
Fisher Instrument’s model FERITSCOPE FMP30

The equipment used to measure the ferrite content shall be FERITSCOPE MP30 which shall

give digital read out of the value either in % Fe (Ferrite content in ferrite percent) or

FN( Ferrite content in ferrite numbers). This instrument uses the magnetic induction test

method whereby the ferrite content shall be obtained from the magnetic permeability.

Probes type: 0.15 to 80% Fe or 0.15-110 WRC FN.

Calibration standard set

5.0 Procedure

A. Surface Requirements
The object on which the ferrite content shall be measured shall be ground flat and free of

grease, dirt etc. Smooth polished surface for testing id more preferable. There shall not be

any item or the like near the measurement point, which shall interfere with the magnetic

characteristics of the instrument.

B. Calibration
Before start of the actual measurement on the object, switch on the instrument and the

normalization and calibration shall be performed using the base and the calibration

standards set as per the manufacturers equipment manual.

Normalization :

 Press ZERO – ZERO appears on the screen

 Make 5 measurements at different location on the base

 The mean value of all the readings will be displayed on the screen

 A conformation indication that the normalization has been carried out successfully
appears on the screen

Corrective Calibration :

 Press CAL – CAL appears on the screen

 Make 5 measurements at different location on the base

 Use arrow keys to the nominal ferrite content value of the calibration standard.
 Make 5 measurements at different location on the calibration standard. Mean value
will be displayed on the screen and press ENTER to end the corrective calibration.

C. Method
i. The probe shall be placed vertically on the surface of the measuring object to perform
the measurement.

ii. The measurement shall be performed within the reference area.

iii. On observation of reading as it appears in the display, the probe can be shifted to next
area of interest as required.

iv. The probe shall be lifted at least 50mm from the measuring object between readings.

6.0 Reporting of test result

All the test results shall be recorded in the FERRITE TEST REPORT FORMAT (Please see
Appendix A) of KEPPEL SHIPYARD LIMITED.
