Title: Measurement Of Ferrite Content In Alloy Steel Material.

1.0 Scope:
This procedure specifies the minimum requirements to carry out the measurement of
ferrite content in alloy steel.

2.0 Reference:
Feritscope MP3 operating instruction manual.

3.0 Inspection Personnel:

Persons performing this test shall have basic knowledge comparable to level II in
NDT as per SNT-TC-IA /1996.

4.0 Equipment:
4.1 Feritscope MP3 along with standard blocks with different known quality ferrite
content.
4.2 Probe GAB 1.3 D Fe with a measurement range of 0.1% - 80% Fe probe type A.

5.0 Procedure / Technique:

5.1 Measurement of Ferrite Content in Alloy Steel shall be performed as per the
following activities.
5.2 Connect and insert the battery type 6L F22, 9V 400 MAH Ni-CAD at the rear of
the instruments battery compartment.
5.3 Connect the single probe GAB 1.3 D Fe (OR) Angle probe GA BW 1.3 Fe
(which ever suit to perform the job) to the instrument.
5.4 Set the Dip switches on instrument head as shown in the sketch.

5.5 Check for the presence of stray magnetic field, which might influence the
readings by holding the probe in air, and switch “ON” button and activate the
display by press “Arrow down “key. Find the ferrite content is displayed as %.
5.6 Calibrate the instrument with one or more reference standard specimens of
known ferrite content (set # 114). Choose the specimen, which cover both ends
of the expected measurement range (Min & Max). Press “APPL” until desired
“CAL” memory is selected, then keep the probe in air and press "CAL”, a “CAL
+ BASE” shall appear in the display. Now keep the probe against the Fe-Base
standard specimen and take 5-10 readings. Press “ENTER CAL” CAL = STD 1
light up. Measure. 1st standard or reference specimen 3 to 5 times. The current
mean value is displayed.
5.7 Set the display to ferrite content of standard specimen by pressing “arrow” keys.
5.8 Press “Enter CAL” to register, STD 2 lights up, If you have one reference
specimen only, Press “Enter Cal” once again to end the calibration. The
instrument displays “…….” and is then ready to measure.
5.9 To take actual measurements from the test specimen ensure that the specimen is
free from oil, grease & dust.
5.10 Keep the probe gently on the test specimen and a measured value is displayed.
Measure 5 to 10 readings at different places on the surface and take the mean
value to denote the actual ferrite content at one location.
5.11 Press “clear MEM” will display the mean, STD deviation, minimum value
maximum value and no. of measurement.
5.12 The next measurement starts a new measurement series
5.13 Final result shall appear by pressing “APPL”
5.14 Clean the equipment and store it in appropriate place.
5.15 Tabulate the readings and make the reports in the standard format qf 091-14.
