3. Equipment needed

A kayak, adaptive paddle, possibly a paddle holder, mount, or outrigger.

4. Activity Description – How will the activity be explained to participants?

Provide a bulleted set of instructions on how to lead the activity, including any
rules or guidelines.
● Individuals are shown all of the equipment and explained how to use
everything before getting into the water.
● The paddle is used in a figure 8 motion, pushing the water in behind you.
● If the individual wanted to go backwards then they would push the water
the opposite direction.
● The leader of the activity is always watching the water to make sure that
everyone is safe and using the equipment to the best of their ability.
● The goal of this activity is for individuals to be able to feel relaxed and
comfortable on the water in their own way.
● Once these basic skills are learned by a person, they could take this to a
competition setting.
5. Primary social interaction pattern(s) (activity analysis) – Explanation of the
reason for the chosen pattern or patterns.

Adaptive kayaking can be an extra-individual social interaction pattern,

aggregate interaction, or intra-group interaction. Extra-individual social
interaction is when one person is with one object. This interaction could be
the case if the individual was kayaking alone, not in a group kayak. An
aggregate interaction is when one person is with an object, but there are
others around but they are not interacting. This circumstance could occur
if each person in the water was in their own kayak. An intra-group
interaction is when 2 or more individuals work together to complete a task.
This could occur if there are 2 people in the kayak and they have to
cooperate to make sure they paddle the same way, etc.

6. Adaptation: One researched adaptation specific to a disability group assigned

for each of the four (4) uploaded activities. This is not for the purpose of
leading activities; this is only for the purpose of submitting activities.

One adaptation for this disability group would be an angled paddle. There
was one specifically that was very helpful for individuals with a variety of
disabilities and injuries called Versa Paddle. This oar is angled, as opposed
to straight, so that it is easier to use if individuals can only use one arm or
have limited ROM with their shoulders. There is also a mount that can be
attached to the kayak to hold the oar. This can help individuals who have
problems gripping the paddle or want to take a break in the middle without
dropping their paddle.
