1. For repeated or regular actions in the present time period. Ex: I take the train to the office. John sleeps eight
hours every night during the week.
2. For facts. Ex: The President of The USA lives in The White House. A dog has four legs.
3. For habits. Ex: Carol brushes her teeth twice a day. They travel to their country house every weekend.
4. For things that are always / generally true. Ex: It rains a lot in winter. The Queen of England lives in Buckingham
Palace.
We form the present tense using the base form of the infinitive (without the TO).
Rules:
1. For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, or -Z we add -ES in the third person.
• go – goes
• catch – catches
• wash – washes
• kiss – kisses
• fix – fixes
• buzz – buzzes
2. For verbs that end in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and add -IES.
• marry – marries
• study – studies
• carry – carries
• worry – worries
• play – plays
• enjoy – enjoys
• say – says
To make a negative sentence we use the auxiliary Do ( I, You, We, They ) or Does ( He, She, It ) not with all
verbs EXCEPT To Be. Ex: You don't speak French. He doesn't speak German.
To make questions we also use the auxiliary Do or Does. Ex: Do you live here? Yes, I do. No, I don´t.
Does your mother cook on the weekend? Yes, she does. No, she doesn´t
Sam and Mary talk in the afternoon. We don´t play soccer at school. Does Jane study here?
Information Questions
The answers for information varied are varied because they are used to ask about specific kinds of information.
Information questions are also called "Wh-" questions because many of the words that are used to ask this type of
What: ask for information about something. Ex: What is on the table? * there is a pencil
When: ask about the time. Ex: When is the party? * It´s on Friday at 2 o´clock
Where: ask questions about palace or position. Ex: Where is your pen? * It´s in your bag.
Who: ask about someone´s identity. Ex: Who is that girl? * She is my sister.
Why: ask for the reason. Ex: Why are you late? * because I missed the bus.
How: ask about the way in which someting happens. Ex: How was the school today? * It was great.
How old: ask for the age: Ex: How old is Sam? * He is 19
How much: ask for quantity of any uncountable nouns. Ex: How much milk do you drink? * two glasses
How many: ask for quantity of any countable nouns. Ex: How many jeans did you buy? * I bought 3 jeans
Where do you live? What is your favorite color? When does school start?
