Survey (NDHS), it is said that Pinoy families are getting healthier. Over 27,496 households and 25,074 women age
15-49 were successfully interviewed in the survey conducted (NDHS 2017). The survey findings emphasize huge
and fast progress in family planning, child survival, and antenatal care coverage. On the other hand, there had been
slow progress in vaccination (basic) coverage, HIV testing, and violence against women. This survey (NDHS 2017)
is the sixth Demographic and Health Survey administered in the Philippines since the year 1993.
Fast Progress
Upon delving into the survey, a lot of married women age 15-49 utilize the family planning method. The most
popular modern method is taking a pill wherein forty percent (40%) of the respondents are using this method. Hence
the most common traditional method is withdrawal wherein fourteen percent (14%) use this method. Compared to
the 1993 survey, the number of women who use family planning increased a lot in 2017 since in the modern method
it increased from twenty-five percent (25%) in 1993 to forty percent (40%) in 2017 and in the traditional method it
increased from ten percent (10%) in 1993 to fourteen percent (14%) in 2017.
It is safe to say that more children are surviving early childhood since the under-5 mortality rate has
significantly declined. In the survey conducted (NDHS 2017) the under-5 mortality rate is 27 deaths per 1,000 live
births while the 1993 survey exhibits 54 deaths per 1,000 live births. With this, it reveals that the under-5 mortality
rate has decreased from fifty-four deaths (1993) to twenty-seven deaths (2017) per 1,000 live births.
Furthermore, the survey revealed that antenatal care coverage is significantly developing. Almost all women ag
15-49 are receiving antenatal care wherein eighty-seven percent (87%) of women are attending four or more
antenatal care visits. In 1993, there is just fifty-five percent (55%) of women who attends antenatal care visits and in
2017 it increased to eighty-seven percent (87%) which shows a huge improvement. The health facility deliveries
have approximately tripled since 1993, from twenty-eight percent (28%) to seventy-eight percent (78%) in 2017.
Moreover, eighty percent (80%) of both newborns and women receive a postnatal check as it helps to deter
intricacies after labor.
Slow Progress
The NDHS 2017 in the Philippines also reveals challenges as there are evident slow progress in basic
vaccination coverage, HIV testing, and violence against women. The basic vaccination coverage has declined to
seventy percent (70%) in 2017. Over the years, it was revealed that basic vaccination flactuates because in 1993 and
2008, it increased from seventy-two percent (72%) to eighty percent (80%) then it declined to seventy percent (70%
in 2017.
The HIV testing in the Philippines showed slow progress since only four percent (4%) of women interviewed
age 15-49 have ever been tested for HIV and obtained a result.
Additionally, the survey (NDHS 2017) also conveys awareness into violence against women. It was revealed
that more than 1 in 4 ever-married women age 15-49 have experienced spousal violence, may it be sexual,
emotional, or physical.
