2CL401 Structural Mechanics-II

Experiment No. 6
Objective:
To measure reaction of an indeterminate beam (Two span continuous beam) subjected to
concentrated load(s).
Equipment: Two span continuous beam.
Apparatus: weights, dial gauges, vernier caliper, load cell and scale.
Procedure:
1) Arrange a test setup of a two span continuous beam.
2) Measure dimensions like effective span, width and depth of the beam.
3) Arrange load cell at position ‘B’ as shown in Fig.1 and record initial reading in load cell.

4) Apply concentrated loads W at a distance of ‘l/2’ from support ‘A’ and ‘C’.
5) Take final reading in load cell.
6) Repeat the procedure for various values of loads.
7) Calculate reaction at support ‘B’ and compare experimental results with analytically
obtained values.

Observation Table:
1) Span of beam:____300___ mm
2) Width of cross section of beam: ___24.32____ mm
3) Depth of cross section of beam: ____5.24_____ mm
4) Modulus of Elasticity: __2 x 105_ N/mm2

Conclusion:
In this experiment we had learnt that what is continues beam then we see how we can
find the reaction and the mid-point we when we apply load at the ends. We also see

what is load cell and type of it and in this experiment we had used S type load cell for
finding the amount of load applied at the centre of beam
