DIRECTIONS: Interview a person who is 45-60 years old. Be guided by the following
questions:
1. What are the things that you remember in your environment when you were my age? -
I could still remember a lot of trees around our farm with different crops below it.
Rivers weren't deep unlike now because of some water-filled quarries. The sunrays
around 7-8 am weren’t that hot and irritating. I could still remember animals have still
habitats. But everything’s changed now.
2. What were the things that you liked doing when you were young? - Every morning we
go to our farm to check our crops and feed our livestocks. I used to swim in the river
together with my childhood friends. My father and I enjoyed catching frogs in the rice
paddy. Those memories are still fresh from me.
3. What are the positive and negative changes in the environment? - Humans are more
aware and protecting endangered species. Activities in protecting the environment
such as tree and mangrove planting. Some of the negative effects are illegal logging,
burning of fossil fuels, pollution and an increase of population.
4. Do you think the environment plays a vital role in a person’s development? Why or
why not? - Personality is developed based on situations you place yourself in and the
influences you allow to affect you. Environments can be positive and negative but it's
about what you take away from the situation that allows you to grow and prosper.
5. Distinguish the ecocentric from the anthropocentric models. Cite examples. -
Ecocentric model is ecological or relational integrity of humans that provides meaning
of our morals and values and it is nature centered. Some of its examples are mining,
illegal logging, proper waste disposal and quarries. Anthropocentric model believes
that humans are superior and central to the universe, thus, it is human centered. One
of its examples is industrocentrism.
6. How do humans react to nature? Explain. In what way are your answers positive or
negative? - Humans react to nature in both negative and positive ways. But for people
like me who still have hope in humanity, there are a lot of activities on how humans
react to nature. Like it reduces fear, anger, stress, and increases pleasant feelings.
DIRECTIONS: Interactive work: Write your answer in your notebook.
1. Discussion: Compare the importance of nature from past to present. - In the past,
nature provided everything we needed including food, shelter and many more. In the
present, forests are cut to construct buildings. That is why nature is being more valued
today to prevent natural disasters like flash floods and landslides.
2. Self-review: Study the ecocentric model and evaluate your
personal understanding and attitudes towards the environment. - As I grew up,
I understood how important nature is. I started initiating activities when I was still in
position in the EMR.
3. Visually guided learning:
A. In groups, answer how you can organize the following images in a more aesthetic way.
B. You must be able to discuss the drawing with your classmates via online.
C. Consider how you can form the images in an aesthetic way:
First Picture: We must create programs in relation with proper waste disposal in
partnership with the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) which aims
to minimize the solid wastes by the year 2035. In this way, cities and municipalities will
conduct major clean-up-drives in their place. This will help the environment with its fast
recovery when it comes to solid waste management.
Second Picture: Animal cruelty is one of the major problems in some places like Africa
where extinct animals are being hunt down for leisure purposes. For us, we could mitigate
this problem by coordinating with the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) to help
stray dogs and other animals who experienced animal abuse. In this way, we could create
a better environment for them.
Third Picture: Pollution is inevitable since we humans have personal needs. It is true that
humanity is the reason why pollution is getting worse. But for us, since we couldn’t stop
pollution all we can do is mitigate or minimize it. Our proposal is to educate more the youth
about this since they will live longer than the elderlies. They will realize how important the
environment is just by looking at some of the natural disasters occured in different parts of
the country.
Fourth Picture: The last picture shows vandalism which can be easily turned into an art.
Young artists can help us in this problem. They can provide a solution through the
problem.

As you can see, in this living world, what we need is a practical solution in different
problems. That is why we decided to be more practical like having partnership with
different sectors of the government. That is how we turn the pictures into an aesthetic way.

DIRECTIONS: Three minutes’ essay: Write your thoughts regarding these passages of this
section. For each passage below you are given three minutes to complete the task.
a. The controlling attitude of humankind is extended to nature, when in fact, humanity is
part of nature.
b. Destroying nature is a reflection wherein few people overpower others while exploiting
the environment for profit or self-interest.
c. Fromm argues that as humans, it is also inherent in us to escape the prison cell of
selfishness.

A. The humanity of the human comes from the mind. The human mind improves upon
nature. This mind enables the human to spare the life of the prey, and incites him to
protect and feed the prey animals through domestication and animal husbandry. No
other animal naturally does so much for the prey.
B. For me, the statement is wrong. The statement is way too narrow a conception of the
issue, far too focused on the activities of modern globalized and industrialized economy
while overlooking innate human psychology and history, shared by all. The surest way to
encourage old ways to fade-out and to get people to adopt newer, better ways of
extracting the materials human need to maintain our economies and our lives, less
damaging to the environment is not to condemn greed and profit but to work toward
making more eco-friendly and more profitable for industries to pursue than the old ways
were.
C. Fromm is referring to one's unity towards others. In order to not feel isolated, it is in the
nature of the human to seek or experience union with others which motivates their
behavior.

Directions: Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

1. What is happiness? If possible, related Fromm’s view with other philosophers
discussed. - Happiness is a state of well-being that is seen as a contentment of
deep and intense pleasure in life, and a natural desire for it to continue.
2. What is freedom? Relate Fromm’s view with other philosophers discussed in
previous lessons. - Freedom is not confusion, but the possibility of becoming
oneself, not as a bundle of greedy desires, but as a carefully balanced structure
which, at any moment, is threatened with alternatives to growth or decay, life or
death.
3. What is joy? Do you agree with Fromm’s view? - Joy is the concomitant of
productive behavior. It is not a peak event that culminates and ends abruptly, but
rather a plateau, a feeling condition that follows the efficient expression of one of
the basic human faculties.

A. Check your knowledge

1. What are the different environmental theories discussed in this lesson? Compare the
theories. - Behavior settings are theorized entities that help explain the relationship
between individuals and the environment, particularly the social environment, while
Ecocriticism is an interdisciplinary study of literature and the environment, where
literary scholars analyze texts that illustrate environmental concerns and examine the
different ways in which literature deals with the subject.
2. What is carbon footprint? - A carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions
caused by an individual, event, organization, service, or product, expressed as carbon
dioxide equivalent.

B. Check your understanding

1. Based on your own understanding, relate and contrast the Anthropocentric and
Ecocentric Models. Write your answers below the drawing.

Anthropocentric Model Ecocentric Model

Anthropocentric Model
Anthropocentric model or anthropocentrism is the belief and desires of humans should
be at the center of how society is constructed. This model on how the world should be viewed is
rooted from the monotheistic religions such as Christianity and Judaism which focused on how
God created the world mainly for the benefit of man giving him dominion.
Ecocentric Model
Ecocentric model or ecocentrism states that humankind is a part of nature as a whole,
with no special status above other things. This model is rooted from religions such as Judaism
that believes that nature should be protected and preserved.

2. Research about animal rights. In your opinion, do animals deserve respect? Why or
why not? - In this beautiful world, animals deserve respect as much as people. They
have as much right to live like us, human beings. Animals surely deserve to live their
lives free from suffering and exploitation.
3. How do you apprehend the meaning of frugality and prudence toward the
environment? Cite three examples. - Frugality in the environment means being
conservative and thrifty in consumption of environmental resources while prudence is
having a good judgement considering the risks of an action.

Examples:
1. Keeping track of climate change.
2. 3 R’s
3. Solar Energy
