2ppt On CAI

The document discusses computer assisted instruction (CAI) which refers to the integrative use of computers to assist the teaching and learning process. It outlines several key types of CAI including drill and practice, tutorials, simulations, educational games, discovery learning, and problem solving. The advantages of CAI are described as individualized instruction, immediate feedback, self-pacing, and helping teachers devote more time to each student. Limitations include the expense of CAI, lack of educational software and infrastructure, and the inability of machines to fully replace human teachers.

Introduction

The past two decades have witnessed a dynamic shift in the way the
computers have been used as a tool in the teaching- learning process.

Today the trend appears to be towards the creation of courses specifically

aimed at computer literacy as well as towards integrating computer
technology in other content areas across the curriculum.

Computer and learning are fast becoming inseparable associates in the field
of modern education. More than just another teachers tool, computers are
being used as teaching and learning partners.

Meaning

CAI is an acronym for Computer Assisted Instruction. It is referred to as the

integrative use of computers. It can also be described as diverse and rapidly
expanding spectrum of computers technologies that assist the teaching and
learning process.
The computer presents, receives, analyze and act upon responses
from each students on individual basis. It is also a way of
individualized, programmed learning whereby smart students learn faster
and the average ones learn at their own pace.
Definition
CAI by Bhatt and Sharma (1992),
“CAI is an interaction between a student , computer controlled display and a
response entry device for the purpose of achieving educational outcomes”

Hilgard and Bower

“ CAI has now taken as so many dimensions that it can no longer be
considered as a simple derivative of the teaching machine or the kind of
programmed learning that Skinner introduced.”

It is a method of instruction in which there is a purposeful interaction

between a learner and a computer device for helping the individual learner
achieve the desired instructional objectives with his own pace and abilities at
his command.
Types or Modes of CAI

1. Drill and Practice

2. Tutorials Programmes
3. Simulations programmes
4. Instructional Games
5. Discovery type
6. Problem solving programmes
7. Practical work
1. Drill and Practice
Drill and practice provide opportunities or students to repeatedly practice the
skills that have previously been presented and that further practice is
necessary for mastery.
2. Tutorial type
2. Tutorial type
Tutorial activity includes both the presentation of information and its
extension into different forms of work, including drill and practice, games
and simulation.

1. Computers can play a role of tutor by maintaining a perfect

interaction with individual students.

2. Tutorial programmes are not only for instruction but also to provide
sufficient practice having proper track of students difficulties and
performance.
3. Simulation
Simulation software can provide an approximation of reality that does not
require the expense of real life or its risks.
Students are made to feel real and idealized situation.
4. Educational Games
Learners are provided with well designed computer games.
These games should not be confused with academic type games.
Their purpose is only to provide intellectual challenge, stimulation of
curiosity and serve as a source of motivation to the individual learner.
5. Discovery type
6. Problem Solving
7. Practical work
CAI can provide valuable help in supplementing laboratory and other
pratical work Students can learn so many things about the science
experiments before actually performing them in his practical class by
watching.
Advantages of CAI
1 .It provides one to one interaction for the learner.
2. It gives instantaneous response and immediate feedback to the answers
elicited .
3. Self pacing. This allows students to proceed at their own pace in the
comfort of their homes.
4. It helps teacher to devote more time to individual students.
[Link] learners can now learn at their convenient time and the computer
serve as a tutor to them.
6. Self directed learning students can decide when ,where and what to
learn.
7. Multimedia helps to understand difficult concepts through multi sensory
approach. With the help of computers, learners can be able to solve difficult
problems
Limitations and Difficulties
1. Quite expensive and uneconomical
2. Unavailability of educational software, lack of infrastructure
3. May lead to indiscipline
4. Can not accommodate
5. No machine can ever match the human beings.
Assignment

1. What do you understand by Computer Assisted Instruction?

2. Write all types of CAI.
3. What are its advantages and limitations?
Learning Outcomes

Students will understand the concept of Computer Assisted Instruction, its

types and advantages and limitations.

SELO
1. Understanding of various thinkers in ET.
2. Critical & innovative thinking skills.
3. Ability to observe and develop sense making, logical skills for
abstract concepts.
