THESIS TITLE: BIKE TIRE PAVER BLOCKS PROCESSING MACHINE

The Problem and its Background

INTRODUCTION:
Concrete paving block in the Philippines is having its beginning in parks and
recreational areas, a typical example of which is the EXPO Filipino. During the last decade,
government as well as non-government agencies had been looking into all possible areas of
massive utilization of the material.
As cited by Ling, T,C. Nor, H.M., Lim, S.K.(2010), By adding rubber into CPB, the
toughness is improved while meeting minimum strength requirements. A total of 4300
rubberized concrete paving blocks (RCPB) were produced in a commercial plant, and 348
RCPB were tested for compression and abrasion performance as prescribed by the Concrete
Masonry Association of Australia (CMAA).
The objective of this study is to promote a practical use and acceptance of disposing
crumb rubber in concrete paving blocks (CPB) by end user. Existing CPB is characterized as
a composite material with high compressive strength but with a low toughness.
The main focus of this study is to fabricate a machine that can crush tyres into pieces
then will go straight to a mixer machine to make a paver block.

Background of the Study:

Block paving also known as brick paving is a commonly used decorative method of

creating a pavement or hard standing. The main benefit of bricks over other materials is that
individual bricks can later be lifted up and replaced. This allows for remedial work to be
carried out under the surface of the paving without leaving a lasting mark once the paving
bricks have been replaced. Typical areas of use would be for
driveways, pavement, patios, town centres, pedestrian precincts and more commonly in road
surfacing. Bricks are typically made of concrete or clay, though other composite
materials are also used. Each has its own means of construction. The biggest difference is the
way they set hard ready for use. A clay brick has to be fired in a kiln to bake the brick hard.
A concrete brick has to be allowed to set. The concrete paving bricks are a porous form of
brick formed by mixing small stone hardcore, dyes, cement and sand and other materials in
various amounts. Many block paving manufacturing methods are now allowing the use of
recycled materials in the construction of the paving bricks such as crushed glass and crushed
old building rubble.

In this study will use the exterior of bike tires for increasing the toughness of the
paver blocks. The process involving this study is shredding and mixing. The shredder will
cut the exterior of bike tire to small pieces then mix to the concrete inside the mixer.
Statement of the Problem:
Today, the Filipino citizen suffers great loss in transportation during this
pandemic. Every public transportation was the most heavily damage and the virus was
spreading very fast. Despite this situation, the used of bicycles for transportation has risen.
Therefore, usage of tires will surely increase and rubber waste will also increase. Burning
rubbers is one solution of limiting its waste but it is not ecofriendly, others propose recycling
of rubbers to lessen the waste and to support an eco-friendly methods of disposing rubbers.
Rubber tires are non-biodegradable material which has a big impact on the environment. The
environmental impacts from tire production includes odour, dust emission, noise, waste,,
energy consumption, and solvent emission (VOC emission). The most significant of these
impacts are VOC emissions, locally, odour. VOC emission is volatile organic compunds are
organic chemical that have high vapour pressure at ordinary room temperature.
This study is to support an eco-friendly way of reducing waste of rubbers that
are harmful to our environment.

OBJECTIVES:
General Objective:
To design and construct a Bike tire Paver Block Processing Machine that will
increase toughness of the block.

Specific Objective:
To determing the mechanical components of the machine that will satisfy the
design protocol
To determine the production rate paver blocks produce by the machine.
To determine the performance of the machine in terms of paver block
production effiency
To determine the acceptability of the Bike Tire Paver Block Processing

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

Disposal of rubber waste is one of the problems that Philippines has to experience
difficulties. Improper disposal may cause harmful effects to our nature. Recycling is one of
the best solution nowadays and it’s an eco-friendly method.
This machine will improve the methods of recycling rubbers and will also help the
industry of paver blocks to produce low budget quality blocks. The result of this study could
be significant and beneficial to the following:
Students. They are the students who are pursuing mechanical engineering course. This study
is to provide knowledge and ideas of recycling rubbers. This will increase the awareness of
building an eco-friendly machine and provides ideas to further improve this study. In this
study, the result will enlightened and become beneficial to the students who are taking
mechanical engineering course.
Teachers. This refers to the mechanical engineering teachers. This study will serve as their
guidelines to promote recycling of rubber waste to the students. They are the instruments to
further improve this study. They can give ideas on how this study would more beneficial to
the community.
Community will be gaining insights of preserving nature by recycling rubber waste. They
are the ones who are the most beneficial. They can improve the production of paver blocks
with low cost budget and better quality. They are the one who can implement this machine to
be used publicly.

SCOPES AND LIMITATIONS:

The general intent of this study is to lessen the rubber waste coming from bike tires
(exterior) and to produce better and low cost paver blocks using recycled material in Laguna,
Philippines.
This study will mainly focus on eco-friendly and easier method of recycling bike
tires. Also, this study focuses to design a machine that is not harmful to the people who will
operate this machine. This type of machine is for shredding bike tires and mixing it cement.
This study yearns to improve the production of paver blocks with minimal budget.
