TIRE BIKE STAND

Project Proposal
Beta Epsilon Project 2017
Abstract

This is the document of the Project proposal for using disposed tires to be used as a main instrument for a
zero-cost full effort project instead of being discarded. It consists of details for the project how it will be
useful for the days to come.
After considering the facts we have found a way to make use of a tire as a bike stand that is way more
effective than the existing technology Silliman University is using not only it would benefit the student,
environment but also the school since the design utilizes the space, safety, and aesthetics for the product.
The project aimed to build a fully functional bike stand that would function way better than the obsolete
bike stand that would benefit everyone. The overall mission of the utility development is to improve the
quality service by making use of its function and giving a great impact to the environment and also to the
beneficiary of the product.
Introduction

Tire recycling is the process of recycling waste tires that are no longer suitable for use on vehicles due to
wear or irreparable damage. These tires are a challenging source of waste, due to the large volume
produced, the durability of the tires, and the components in the tire that are ecologically
problematic. Because they are highly durable and non-biodegradable, tires can consume valued space in
landfills. In 1990, it was estimated that over 1 billion scrap tires were in stockpiles in the United States.
Tires are not desired at landfills, due to their large volumes and 75% void space. Tires can
trap methane gases, causing them to become buoyant, or bubble to the surface. This 'bubbling' effect can
damage landfill liners that have been installed to help keep landfill contaminants from polluting local
surface and ground water. Shredded tires are now being used in landfills, replacing other construction
materials, for a lightweight back-fill in gas venting systems, leachate collection systems, and operational
liners. Shredded tire material may also be used to cap, close, or daily cover landfill sites. Scrap tires as a
back-fill and cover material are also more cost-effective, since tires can be shredded on-site instead of
hauling in other fill materials.
Due to their heavy metal and other pollutant content, tires pose a risk for the leaching of
toxins into the groundwater when placed in wet soils. Research has shown that very little leaching occurs
when shredded tires are used as light fill material; however, limitations have been put on use of this
material; each site should be individually assessed determining if this product is appropriate for given
conditions. For both above and below water table applications, the preponderance of evidence shows that
TDA (tire derived aggregate, or shredded tires) will not cause primary drinking water standards to be
exceeded for metals. Moreover, TDA is unlikely to increase levels of metals with primary drinking water
standards above naturally occurring background levels.
By making use of the recycled tires instead of discarding it to the landfills which is a usual
method the city is using we could make a difference.
The project aims not only to end in the engineering grounds but will improve its scope to the
school and later on to the community, this project could be a big step on reduce, reuse and recycling one
of the major concern the environment is facing specifically in Dumaguete city.
Key Benefits

The project will provide solutions for the problems the old-fashioned bike stand cannot
provide. Primary benefits that can be acquired by replacing the present product.

STUDENT
- Tire material insulates metal which will provide students a scratch free bike stand
- The spaces can be freely manipulated that will provide a fixed position for the bike.
- The bike can be inserted easier, faster and will look more secured due to its design.
- It will show a more detailed and looks cooler than the usual bike stand that makes the
bikes disorganized if not placed properly.

ENVIRONMENT
- By reusing the tire it will decrease the disposal of the product to in the environment.
- Due to its design, water cannot penetrate to the inside of the product thus making it
safe to the public for its usage.
- The old bike stand imposes danger for the user and the environment since it uses steel
as a byproduct of the utility that is used.
- Steel will eventually wear-out due to the direct exposure to the weather that would
eventually end up disposing the product and could cost a new one due to demand.

SCHOOL
- It utilizes space.
- Maintenance is cost-free.
- Installation of product is cost-free
- Tire bike stand design can be easily manipulated due to its material.
Procedure

Flow of the Project

The Tire bike stand designing and implementation in efforts of the Beta Epsilon
fraternity/sorrority with cooperation of the College of Engineering and Design for the Silliman University
engineering grounds begins with gathering of materials which Mr. Yasay of RML marketing and tire
services assured us as long as they have the product they can provide as much as needed transported with
the aid of the Silliman University Buildings and Grounds(BG) which will be organized and planned by
the concerning officials of the engineering faculty staff and Beta Epsilon fraternity/sorority and friends
before execution of the final product.
