Parts list in design-engineering documentation

Orientation
This standard is based on Ford Motor Company’s Engineering CAD and Drafting Standard A-3.

1 Scope and field of application

The parts list for design-engineering documents is a required chart used to identify all components or
"Purchased in Assembly" (PIA) parts that are used in an assembly.
For traceability and correctness, the parts list shall be maintained with up-to-date Volvo Cars and supplier
part numbers. The component-to-assembly structure shall match the Engineering Release System KDP.

2 Definitions
Design-engineering documentation includes the document types:
• Single-part drawing
• Assembly drawing
• Single-part CAD the Master /annotaded geometry model
• Assembly CAD the Master /annotaded geometry model

3 Requirements
3.1 General
Information columns are identified as follows and may be shown in any order, but it is preferred that they
follow the order described in this standard, see table 1.

3.2 Quantity
The Quantity of the each component as identified in the assembly shall be shown in the Qty column, see
table 1.

3.3 Item number

The Item number of the each component as identified on the drawing shall be shown in the Item column,
see table 1.

3.4 Supplier part umber

The Supplier part or part identification number, if it exists, shall be listed in the Supplier part No. column
for all components within an assembly, see table 1.

3.5 Volvo Cars part number

All components and sub-assemblies identified with a Volvo Cars part number for service shall be
identified in their entirety in both the Engineering Release System KDP and the parent assembly drawing
Parts list. This also concerns all Volvo Cars PIA part numbers affecting safety and/or Volvo Cars part
numbers.

3.6 Part name

When a Volvo Cars part number is identified in the parts list, the official Volvo Cars part name shall be
shown in the Part name column, see table 1. The title in the parts list is to be stated exactly as it is listed
within the Engineering release system KDP.

3.7 Material
Each component part's material specification shall be added to the parts list in the Material column using
Volvo Cars or industry standard material specifications such as ISO, SAE, etc., unless already identified
on a different level of assembly, see table 1.

3.8 Material finish/Heat treatment

Material finish and any material post-processing (e.g. heat treatment) shall be added to the parts list in
the Material finish/Heat treatment column using Volvo Cars or industry standard material specifications
such as ISO, SAE, etc., unless already identified on a different level of assembly, see table 1.

3.9 Recycling code

If any of the component materials are recyclable, the Recycling code column shall be added and the
appropriate recycling codes shall be used. See VCS 5052,42.

3.10 Tabulated assembly parts list

In order to add part numbers of assembly parts to be released, a tabulated assembly parts list is required.
Qty columns are then added and can be utilized as a matrix for component-to-assembly structure. The
parts list shall list all of the components used in all assemblies with either a numeric quantity or an "X"
placed in the appropriate tabulation column for each component. The table below shows an example of a
tabulated assembly parts list.
