Model Assumptions:
Arrivals:
 Passengers arrive according to non-homogeneous, time-varying Poisson
process.
 Passengers are very patient and do not abandon.
o In fact, when passengers are blocked, they simply push the button
again after the elevator departs.
Elevator System:
 Passenger requests to go up or down.
 Western elevator system.
o Passenger assignments may not be changed.
 Destination floor distribution is time dependent.
o Beginning of day vs. lunch time & end of day.

Algorithms:
Sectors:
Each elevator has its own sector, a subset of floors, and only services calls that
originate from that sector.
Nearest Elevator:
Each passenger is assigned the nearest elevator as determined by elevator position,
direction of call, and elevator direction.
Nearest Elevator with Capacity Considerations:
Like Nearest Elevator, but also considers the load in each elevator.
Sectors:
 Elevator 1: {1, 2, 3}.
 Elevator 2: {1, 4, 5}.
 Elevator 3: {1, 6, 7, 8}.
 Each elevator can service ground floor since the ground floor generally has
the highest arrival rate.

1) Fill the 11 L and pour it into the 7 L

You have 4 L left in the 11 L

2) Pour out the 7 L. Transfer the 4 L into the 7 L

You now have 4 L in the 7 L container.

3) Fill the 11 L container again. Pour it into the 7 L container until that container is full

Because the 7 L container already had 4 L in it, it could only take 3 L more.
Therefore the amount of liquid left in the 11 L is (11 L - 3 L) = 8 L

4) Pour out the 7 L container again. Transfer the 8 L from the 11 L container into the
7 L container.

You now have 8 L of liquid in the 7 L container.

5) Fill up the 11 L container completely, and start pouring it into the 7 L container
until the 7 L container is full.

Since the 7 L container already had 8 L in it, it could accommodate no more litre.
Thus, you poured 0 L out of the filled 11 L container, leaving 10 L left in the 11 L
container.
