A. Essay:
1. How do managers develop the skills, roles and competencies needed to effectively perform
their work? Which of them cannot be learned?
Skills, roles and competencies are three different words but equally necessary for a
company to succeed. Among this three, competencies cannot be learned because it is much
more difficult to develop and even to learn, it can take years to change an employee’s
personal behaviors and competencies can be more difficult to judge as well when trying to
evaluate an employee or candidate, judging if an employee is competent in their position
can be much more subjective compared to skills which is easier to quantify (McClure, n.d.).
2. List down 5 Leaders that you admire the most. What are their attributes as a Leader?
Thousands of books and case studies have been written about leadership. Dozens
of leadership characteristics have been proposed and out of the many I have read, the
leaders that I admire the most are Andres Bonifacio, Corazon Aquino, Miriam Defensor
Santiago, Barack Obama, and Rodrigo Duterte. First is Andres Bonifacio, he was a
leader of the Philippine Revolution and the president of the Tagalog Republic, a short-
lived government in the Philippines. His attributes as a leader are optimistic attitude,
strong sense of responsibility, value for work and virtue of not wasting time, social
responsiveness, patriotism and love for his native language, and humility. These are the
values the Filipinos must imitate from a man who never expected to be on the spotlight,
but out of love for his country that changed the course of Philippine history (The Famous
People, n.d.). Second is Corazon Aquino, she has become an icon of democracy and the
symbol of People Power not only in the Philippines but throughout the world. Corazon
Aquino is among those honored, renowned for her moral integrity and unyielding
courage. Her personality gives many the impression of a responsible, strong willed
individual, and pure intentions to free the Philippines away from the bondage of
tyrannical rule and lead towards democracy (TFP, n.d.). Third, Miriam Defensor
Santiago was a Filipina academic, lawyer, judge, author, and stateswoman, who served
in all three branches of the Philippine government the judicial, executive, and
legislative. Her legal brilliance and courageous example in fighting corruption results
her becoming a globally famous personality. She is recognized as an exemplary and
convincing speaker. She enlightens you of what’s ahead, cracks jokes to let your mind
at ease after hearing the tough journey ahead of you and gives you the light to move
toward the right direction. She also has the dignity and principles in life that nobody can
break, and indeed fearless (TFP, n.d.). Fourth, Barack Obama served as the 44th
President of the United States. He is one of the most influential and charismatic leaders
of our modern age. He is capable of promoting global understanding and peace and
compassionate enough to address anything. He has a very gentleman-approach to
problems, full of love and forgiveness. His lessons to our world are very great and can
as well help everyone become a great, yet responsible, member of the society (Husain,
2017). Lastly, Rodrigo Duterte is a Filipino politician who was elected president of the
Philippines in 2016. As a leader, President Duterte is tough and fearless, even before he
assumes the presidency many drug lords, pushers and users surrendered, left the country
or hid in their caves. He is also a brilliant tactician and strategies that help many
Filipinos. He is a good listener, have a high degree of empathy, yearns for unity and
longing for peace for his people. With the numerous positive traits we can muster about
our president, he is considered by many as legendary because he has big plans for our
country, all for unity, peace and progress (TFP, n.d.).
3. Differentiate Bosses from Leaders.
The business world oftentimes uses the terms boss and leader interchangeably but
there are very distinct characteristics that differentiate the two. The most crucial leadership
approach is to focus on sustainable solutions in any situation. A boss will tell you what to
do while a leader will demonstrate how and why to do it. Brilliant leaders are very sensitive
when it comes to formulating strategies to compromise in groups. A boss is a subject matter
expert but a leader is an emotional and people expert. Connecting individual
accomplishment to the achievement of those they lead shows true leadership wherein a
leader wants you to feel successful even if you failed compared to a boss who needs you to
perform well for their success. The ability to be forward-looking and to inspire a shared
vision elevated someone from being a credible individual to being a true leader. A leader
acknowledges success based on passion and its influence while bosses appreciate their
success by its title or rank in the business. A leader must be forward-looking or a visionary
and have the courage to do what is right. A boss focuses on what he thinks is right at the
moment while a leader focused on doing what is right. A leader possesses the competence
and will to surmount any challenges. Bosses are controlled by fear compared to leaders who
stay driven by passion and purpose even if they experience change. A leader will guide,
inspired, and even cheered for their people's success. A true leader will want you to do better
in the future and a boss always wants to stay as a boss (Fannin, n.d.).
4. Describe any experience or any scenario in school or at work of you being a leader?
