CHAPTER 1

Exercise 1

a) Language describes who we are and where we come from. In addition, the language also shows
how our relationship with others that can be heard from the style of language we use to others.
Therefore, we should use language with the correct choice of words to whom we speak. We
should use formal word of choices with whom has a higher title and who is older than us and we
can use casual language when talking to people closest to us or younger than us.
b) I would use a formal language when I greet my school principal. I used to have a slightly more
formal choice of words when I am with my father than with my mother. I would use the casual
greeting to my best friend because we have a deep relationship than with others.
c) He used a harsh word of choice like “Bastard” which has an inappropriate meaning when
addressing or mentioning someone’s name.

Exercise 2

a) A list of all my names called by people who knows me:

Muthi’ah friends at school, everywhere
Muthik friends at school
Mut friends at school
Mun friends at school
Risa my family at home, everywhere
Some people call me by more than one name. Most of people choose one name rather than
another for me because they were closest to me and have a deep relationship with me.

Exercise 3

a) Addressing her (my mother)

i. Mama, (sometimes) Memo
ii. Mama,
iii. Mama
b) Referring to her
i. Mama
ii. Mama
iii. Ibu
iv. Mama
I don’t know what influences me but I used to address or mention my mother with
“mama” wherever I am and whom I talked to.
Exercise 4

a) Vocabulary choice:
Tender vs tell, destination vs where you’re going, exact vs right.
Syntax:
The more formal verbs in (c) assist in avoiding the use of the personal pronouns me and you (d),
the determiner is omitted before exact and destination which increases the impersonality of the
expression.
b) Whether spoken or written, sentences (a) and (c) are also more formal and distancing.
Sentences (b) and (d) would be appropriate in speech in informal contexts.

Exercise 5

I use at least two varieties (language, dialects, style) on a normal weekday. I usually use Indonesian
language, and sometimes Javanese or English language at home, college, or other place.

I ever use more than variety in the same social context when I am with my best friend or people closest
to me.
