Adverbs of frequency

Adverbs of frequency indicate how often an activity happens. The most

common adverbs of frequency are:

Always Most frequent

Usually / Often
Sometimes
Rarely / Hardly ever
Least frequent Never

These adverbs are normally placed before the action. Check these examples:
 Takanashi always walks three kilometers a day.
 He sometimes rides a motorcycle.
 He often works in his garden.
 I never smoke. My father had lung cancer.

However, adverbs of frequency are placed after the verb to be. Check!
 Takanashi is never stressed.
 He is rarely ill.
 Okinawan people are hardly ever ill.
 I am usually late for class.
Careful: Other common adverbs of frequency are: generally, normally,
occasionally, regularly, annually, monthly, weekly and daily.

Activity 1: Complete the sentences with an adverb of frequency: never,

always, sometimes, usually and hardly ever.
