What is Simple Past? S
P The simple past is used to talk about an
action that ended in a time before the
P current one. The duration is not relevant.
The time in which the action takes place
can be the recent past or the distant past.
C The term ago is useful to express temporal
distance in the past. It is placed after the
time period in question: a week ago, three
years ago, a minute ago.

• I went to the store

P It means, that I go to the store, but in a past tense.

• You played video games last night

C It means, you played video games referring to the past


tense, last night.

• They made a cake for us

What is Past Continuous?

You use Past Continuous while describing any past
event or condition which was continuing at some
point in time in the past. The past continuous tense is

formed by combining the past tense of to be (i.e.,
C was/were) with the verb's present participle (-ing
word). There are many situations in which this verb
tense might be used in a sentence. For example, it is
often used to describe conditions that existed in the
D past.

• He was listening to music while walking in the garden.

It means that he was listening to music and walking at the same time.

• The sun was shining every day that summer. P


Which means that the sun was shining everyday that summer.

• While she was cooking food, the microwave blew up. C


It means that she was cooking food, but and got distracted while putting a plate
in the microwave, forgot to take the paper foil off and the microwave exploted.
