CHAPTER I
PRELIMINARY
A. Background
The past continuous tense, also known as the past progressive tense, refers to
a continuing action or state that was happening at some point in the past. The past
continuous tense is formed by combining the past tense of to be (i.e., was/were)
with the verb’s present participle (-ing word).
There are many situations in which this verb tense might be used in a
sentence. For example, it is often used to describe conditions that existed in the
past.
One final caution: Though the irregularities are few, not every verb is suited to
describing a continuous action. Certain verbs can’t be used in the past continuous
tense. One common example is the verb to arrive.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION
before), selama (was in progress during), dan mungkin berlanjut setelah
(continued after) waktu atau aksi lainnya yang terjadi pada masa lampau.
Past continuous tense dibentuk dengan auxiliary verb “be”, berupa was atau were
– karena past tense (terjadi di masa lalu), dan present
participle. Was untuk singular subject berupa singular noun (seperti: Andi, book,
dan cat) dan singular pronoun (seperti: I, she, he, dan it) kecuali “you”;
sebaliknya were yang merupakan plural verb digunakan pada plural
subject seperti plural noun (seperti: cats, people, books) dan plural
pronoun (seperti: you, they, we, dan cats), dan you.
Tense ini umumnya hanya terjadi pada aksi berupa dynamic verb, tidak stative
verb karena secara umum hanya dynamic verb yang memiliki bentuk continuous.
Apabila kita sudah memahami present continuous tense dengan baik, pemahaman
mengenai past continuous tense tidaklah sulit untuk didapatkan.
Contoh kalimat:
Penjelasan:
Dia sedang tidur ketika orang tuanya tiba pada pukul 21.00. Ini berarti bahwa
dia telah tidur sebelum jam 21.00 (began before), masih tidur ketika orang tuanya
tiba pada pukul 21.00 (was in progress), dan mungkin masih tidur setelah jam
21.00 (continued after). Semua rangkaian kejadian tersebut terjadi pada suatu
waktu di masa lampau, yang artinya sudah tidak terjadi pada saat ini.
Untuk membentuk kalimatnya, kita harus menerapkan rumus bentuk lampau dari
be + present participle (-ing) pada kata kerja utama.
Penggunaan
Bentuk past continuous tense secara khusus digunakan untuk keadaan sebagai
berikut:
Penjelasan:
b) Untuk menunjukkan bahwa suatu Mr. Hill was watching a movie when the
aksi terjadi terlebih dahulu dan masih lamp fell on the floor.
Penjelasan:
Mengingat kalimatnya tidak selalu berdiri sendiri dan umumnya ditemani oleh
kalimat simple past, maka penting untuk mengetahui penggunaan while, when,
dan as soon as sebagai keterangan waktu yang sering dijumpai pada bentuk
kalimat past continuous tense.
Penjelasan:
Menunjukkan suatu aksi yang terjadi
pada satu spesifik waktu. Oleh karena

itu, umumnya diikuti oleh bentuk simple

past tense.
masa lalu. Sehingga when lebih tepat
untuk digunakan daripada while.
As soon as she found out that her baby
As soon as fell, she put her baby back to bed.
Jadi, bentuk kalimatnya umumnya diawali oleh keterangan waktu while ketika
berada dalam kalimat kompleks. Namun, when juga sering diikuti oleh kalimat
past continuous, umumnya pada percakapan sehari-hari.
o Keanu always cooked by himself. Keanu was cooking in his dorm
last night.
Shella was waiting for rain to
o Shella usually walked to her campus.
stop yesterday.
b) Untuk menyatakan keadaan yang b) Untuk menyatakan situasi yang

continuous.
Contoh kalimat:
Contoh kalimat:
Shella was reading book when
o Shella broke her leg while she was her mother called her to eat
skiing, dinner.
Alan was fixing his bicycle when
o The doorbell rang when Keanu was

cooking.
sedang berlangsung. Subordinate conjunction while dan when dapat
digunakan dengan formulasi sebagai berikut.
My neighbor was always chasing stray cats off with his broom.
3
(Tetangga saya selalu mengusir kucing-kucing liar dengan sapunya.)
