SECTION A: (40 Marks)

1. Use the matrix method to solve the following simultaneous equations.

4x = y + 7
6x + 5y = 17 (4 marks)

2. Simplify 5√5 - 2√10 + √125 (4 marks)

3. Find the smallest angle in a triangle whose sides are in the ratio 8 : 10 : 14

4. A 2 x 2 matrix transforms the unit vectors 1 and 0 onto vectors

10. If n(A) = 10 and n(B) = 6, what are the greatest and least possible values of:

i) n(AUB) ii) n(AnB)? (4 marks)

SECTION B:

11. Draw the graph of the curve y = x2 – 4x for -2≤ x ≤ 5.


a) Use your graph to solve the equations.
i) x2 – 4x – 3 = 0 ii) x2 – 5x + 2 = 0
b) Find the minimum value of the curve and the value of x for which it occurs.
c) For what range of values of x is x2 – 4x < 0 ? (15 marks)

12. In the figure shown PQ = 6 cm, QR = 4 cm, ST = 6 cm and RS = 10 cm.


UQ is parallel to TR.
a) Show that triangle PQU is similar to triangle PRT.
b) Find the length of the line: i) UV ii) VQ

13. The table below shows the income tax of a certain country for government
employees. This is applied after the allowances have already been
deducted.

a) the amount he pays as monthly income tax (P.A.Y.E)
b) his net monthly income.

14. A triangle PQR has vertices P(2,5) Q(2,2) and R (4,3). The image of PQR under the

15. A factory produces three types of portable radio sets called Sanyo, National
and Haiwa. A sanyo set contains 1 transistor (T), 10 resistors (R) and 5
capacitors (c). A National set contains 2T, 18R and 7C. A Haiwa set
contains 3T, 24R and 10C. Arrange this information in matrix form.

If the factory’s monthly out put is 100 Sanyo, 200 National and 80 Haiwa
sets, find its monthly requirements of capacitors, resistors and capacitors.
