2. By the end of the lesson students will be able to draw one thing they built.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

 Various building materials

 Sketch books and pencil

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

 Students might not get to visit every station due to time cleaning up and between rotations. That is okay, as
they should get to at least 4.

PROCEDURE

Introduction Time

Today is going to be a building exploration day for the students for our brand-new science unit. 5 minutes
Students will be put into small groups to explore a variety of materials that they can use to build
different objects of their own choosing.
They will take their sketchbook and pencil with them to each station and if they build something really
interesting, or cool, then they will draw it in their sketch book.
All student MUST draw at least one thing that they have created in their sketchbook.
Students can build towers, houses, cars, anything that they want using their imagination.
 No guns or weapons of any kind of they will sit out and not build anything.

Body Time
2
Building These will run in 10 minutes rotations so students will get to explore with a 50
Exploration variety of materials. Students will switch when it is time, and cannot go back and minutes
forth between stations. When they are sent to a station, they stay at that station
the whole 10 minutes. At the 1-minute mark, freeze and take their
building/object apart for the next group. While they are building, they can also
draw their exploration in their sketchbook.
Station 1: Lego
Station 2: Unifix Blocks
Station 3: K-Nex
Station 4: Tinker Toys
Station 5: Brain Flakes

Rotate around and talk with the students about what they are building and what it
can be used for.

Conclusion Time

Have students clean up all materials and put away neatly. Have the students come to the magic carpet 5-10
and share the various things that they made, verbally, as they will all be taken apart and put away. If minutes
they have a picture drawn in their sketchbook, they can share it with the class.

Assessment

 Observations and conversations about what they are building, materials and what it can be used for
 Sketch book designs
