MORDEN'S
Physical Education Newsletter

I believe physical education is more than just teaching students the rules and how-to
PHILOSOPHY

of a specific sport or activity, but also about teaching them important skills that will
positively impact their lives. Physical education involves student participation to gain
the knowledge and fundamental skills such as teamwork and cooperation. This allows
students to develop positive attitudes that will help them later in both inside and
outside of the classroom. As a physical education teacher, it is important to help
students learn how to safely and properly participate in activities and sports, as well as
how to take care of their bodies, and how to develop healthy habits. This helps them to
develop a routine of daily physical activity, which is important for positive mental and
physical health.

Students will learn through the integration of various teaching styles in the physical education
environment:

TEACHING
· The first style that students will experience is direct instruction. They will follow the
sequence of reviewing old content/skills, learning new content/skills, practicing new
STYLES

content/skills, receiving feedback and then practicing to perfect.

· The next teaching style that will be used for students to learn is personalized instruction.
They will progress through different learning modules that will require them to take
ownership of their success and strive to become independent learners.
· The final teaching style students will become familiar with, is sports education. They will be
taught a sport beyond the game and become members of a team. Students will take
responsibly for their given team role(s) that will help to promote in-depth understanding and
authentic, educationally rich experiences.

Students knowing the safety, routines and behaviour expectations in my physical education classroom will
MANAGEMENT

be important components to comprehend. Together, these concepts will contribute to a positive learning
environment that ensures safety and skill development. The three major rules in my physical education
classroom all encompass the core value of respect. Students will need to respect themselves, respect
others and respect the equipment at all times. They will demonstrate this through the following:
1. No talking, when the teacher or other students are talking.
2. Always treat the equipment appropriately and put away properly.
3. Demonstrate good sportsmanship and appropriate behaviour towards others.
It will be an expectation that students will arrive to class prepared each day with proper attire (shoes and
clothing), will enter and exit the gym quietly and orderly, and abide by the classroom rules. Inappropriate
behaviour and actions will have consequences that include conversations with the teacher,
parents/guardians and school administration, based on severity.

In my physical education classroom, there will be an emphasis on process (mechanics) over product
(making 10/10 free throws) for students to be successful. Students need to be able to display a
ASSESSMENT

positive attitude, and have a willingness to participate. Culminating grades will be determined using
the four parts of the Alberta physical education curriculum:
A: Activity (skills) B: Benefits (health appreciation)
C: Cooperation D: Daily (participation)
Students will receive feedback and be assessed using the following methods:
·In-class discussions ·Observations ·Rubrics
·Checklists (teacher and peer assessment) ·Exit Slips (self-assessment)
Summative grading will be broken down as follows:
·Skills (A) - 20%
·Attitude and Social Skills (B+C) - 40%
·Participation (B+D) - 40%

I will strive to create an inclusive learning environment, and accommodate all

INCLUSIVE

students through the following:

· Have discussions on expectations and behaviours to ensure students
understand that they all have different needs and learning styles
· Seek and acknowledge student feedback to ensure activities and
information are being learned in ways that best suit their needs
· Use a range of teaching strategies to help students reach their full
potential
· Modify and adapt rules and activities to ensure an equitable environment
