Business Need
HIGHLIGHTS In an effort to switch to renewable sources of energy to power the country's major ports,
the Ministry of Shipping signed an MOU with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) in
October 2015 for the development of solar power projects at major ports across India. The
Plant Capacity plan is to set up 91.50 MW of solar energy capacity at the twelve ports across the country.
When completed, these renewable energy projects will help in the reduction of carbon
10 MW dioxide emission by 136,500 MT annually. These projects will also help to reduce cost of
power purchased by utilization of renewable energy for power generation, resulting in
No. of modules installed estimated saving of about INR 750 million annually.

Polycrystalline Visakhapatnam Port is one of 12 major ports in India and the only major port of Andhra Pradesh. It
is India's second largest port by volume of cargo handled. It is located on the east coast of India and
Annual capacity is located midway between the Chennai and Kolkata Ports.
15,00,000 kWh (Aprx.) Visakhapatnam Port has three harbours - the outer harbour, inner harbour and the fishing harbour.
The outer harbour has 6 berths capable of handling vessels with a draft up to 17 meters while the
smaller inner harbour has 18 berths that are Panamax compatible. The Dolphin's Nose Hill to the

north of the entrance channel protects the harbour from cyclones that strike the east coast.

WHAT IS NET-METERING?
§ Helps manage the excess
power generated from SPV
§ Allows local DISCOMS to
purchase renewable energy at
a reasonable cost
§ Reduces cost of SPV by
reducing dependency on
batteries

Solution
OUR EPC Jakson Group successfully commissioned a 10 MW solar power plant at Vishakhapatnam port,
Andhra Pradesh. Jakson provided complete turnkey EPC services that included design &
SERVICES engineering, procurement, supply of equipment and materials, testing, inspection and
commissioning including comprehensive operation and maintenance for a period of 7 years.
All associated civil, structural, electrical & mechanical work for land preparation was done by
Site Jakson. Jakson also provided for SCADA compatible solar PCUs with and state-of-the-art
Survey plant monitoring system for data acquisition and remote monitoring facilities with provision for
data transfer to the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC).
The project spread over an area of over 50 acres, was commissioned in two stages, with 6.25
Design &
MW in the first stage and 3.75 MW being commissioned subsequently. Powering the facility is a

set of 36,620 high efficiency solar PV modules of 310 Wp each. The plant generates
approximately 150 lakh units of electricity, to be used primarily for running day to day
Supply & operations of the port. Any additional units generated, will be sold to power utilities using net
Erection metering facility.
