Culturally Sensitive and Bias-Free Language

1) What do we mean by culturally sensitive and bias-free language? Explain in your own words. (5
pts.)
Culturally-sensitivity is the individual’s awareness of the various cultures and traditions wherein
people should accept the fact that we have our own differences and similarities. By accepting the
uniqueness every person has, we should be mindful of our words and expressions to avoid
misunderstandings. It is better to be clear than to be confused and that is the concept of bias-free
language. In order to prevent conflict in conversations and any other forms of communication, a
person should practice of being biased-free. Expressing specificity is better than generality.
Moreover, thinking should be done before conveying your messages.

2) Explain the importance of understanding the culturally sensitive and bias-free language? Discuss.

First and foremost, the fact that we have our own cultures means that we also have our own
level of sensitivity as a person. A simple word can affect the mindset, actions, and how a person may
interact with people. There are instances that people generalized the actions such as when a specific
person discriminates or insults a foreigner, that might change the view of that person to their citizens.
Moreover, if an individual understands the concept of bias-free language and being culturally
sensitive he or she may communicate ethically. This may result to a democratic country wherein
people have the courage to speak up without the fear of being discriminated in any forms such as
racism, gender and sexual orientation, social class, age, and disabilities. You will also be respected
because you show respect to others.

3) Sum up the general principles to follow when referring to different groups or category such as race
and ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, social class, age, and disabilities. Use your own words
in summing up as briefly as possible. (15 points)
Race and Ethnicity – Avoid identifying people by race or ethnicity. The complexions of people
should also be considered unique and not teasing them if it is different from you. People should be
careful of the terminologies that they should use. It is not sugarcoating but showing respect to our
individualities. Religion is also a concept of race and ethnicity wherein people should avoid
stereotyping because the religion of the majority does not mean it is also the beliefs of others.
Gender and Sexual Orientation – It is better to use ordinary terms rather than layman’s
terms. Another, alternative pronouns are better such as “one” or “you” to avoid being gender biased.
There are also preferrable terms for the members of LGBTQI community, job titles and descriptions
for both male and female.
Social Class – Less sensitive and negative terms can be used to describe the situations of a
person. For instance, instead of using “squatters” it is better to call them “informal settlers”.
Age – Avoid underestimating people because of their age. Each person has their own
capabilities and experiences being encountered. It is also better to be specific in a way that females
and males are the preferred terms for the girls and boys in the age of 18 years old and above.
Disabilities – When describing a person with disability, an individual should focus on the
person and not the condition. Negative usages should be avoided and instead use some less
sensitive terms such as “a person with AIDS”.
