Project Abstract (250 word maximum):

You will have the opportunity to give a more detailed project description in Section 4.

This exploration is about phytoplankton biodiversity in Satonda (Motitoi) lake at Satonda Island. The
purpose of this study is to determine the diversity and phytoplankton communities in this Lake. Based on
the formation process, this lake is a volcanic lake that was formed due to the eruption process of mount
Satonda a thousand years ago. The lake has a unique geographical and hydrological characteristic. This
lake is famous in the world of science since 1984 when first discovered as a lake that has unique
characteristics, which are similar to ancient ocean conditions. Satonda can be viewed as a window
contemporary (porthole) to get a peek at the characteristics of our sea conditions billions of years ago.
Satonda Lake is a rare phenomenon due to its water salty by alkalinity (level basicity) accompanied by
pH and solubility very high carbonate compared to seawater generally. Based on the characteristics and
background of the Satonda lake, it is important to conduct research related to specific phytoplankton
biodiversity so we can get an overview in studying the phytoplankton community that existed in
prehistoric times. And it can also make it possible to find new compositions and species that have not
been discovered with extreme environmental conditions such as the Satonda Lake

3 / 18
Elevator Pitch (50 words maximum):

Please describe your project in one or two short sentences in terms that will be clear to the layperson.

This exploration is related to the diversity of phytoplankton in Lake Satonda. Lake Satonda is a unique
lake because it is a volcanic lake and is a picture of the marine ecosystem of the past.

Scientific/Technical Publication: Please also briefly note any plans for scientific or technical
publication.

(800 word maximum, please do not attach any additional pages for project description)

Background:
Exploration will be carried out in Lake Satonda which is a volcanic lake that was formed thousands of
years ago of the volcanic activity of Mount Satonda. This lake also called Motitio Lake located on a small
island called Satonda Island, which is located in the Flores Sea, north of the island of Sumbawa, including
Dompu Regency. Geographically, its position is at the coordinates 8o 7 'South Latitude and 117o 45' East
Longitude. This lake is famous in the world of science since 1984 when first discovered as a lake that has
very unique characteristics, which are similar to ancient ocean conditions. Lake Satonda can be viewed
as a window contemporary (Porthole) to get a peek at the characteristics of our sea conditions billions of
years ago. Satonda Lake is a rare phenomenon due to its water salty by alkalinity (level basicity)
accompanied by pH and solubility very high carbonate compared to seawater generally
Several previous studies have proven that Lake Satonda is "palaeo-oceanographic laboratories. Initial
research related to ecology and biodiversity in lakes found calcareous reef-like structures consisting of
red algae, serpulids (a kind of tubeworm), and foraminifera and cyanobacteria which deposit limestone
and form whole carbonate formations. called stromatolite. The structure of the stromatolite at the bottom

9 / 18
of this lake is very similar to the type of stromatolite that was once widespread in the Earth's Ocean
during the early Plaeozoicum era that began about 4,500 million years ago. In particular, now people can
dive and observe the appearance of modern stromatolites such as those in Lake Satonda, so it is like
peering into the ancient oceanic environment, which according to Kempe et al. (1997): “Satonda: a
porthole view into the oceanic past.
Although there are many unique characteristics of the ecosystem in this lake, there is still not much
exploration related to specific aquatic organisms such as phytoplankton. Phytoplankton is important
organisms that are the foundation of the aquatic food web. These organisms are the primary producers in
the waters. Changes in water conditions and characteristics of intact water can be studied by knowing
the composition of the existing phytoplankton. Related to Satonda Lake, so we can find out the more
specific condition of this lake. Moreover, this is very important to provide an overview in studying the
phytoplankton community that existed in prehistoric times. And it can also make it possible to find new
compositions and even new species that have not been discovered with extreme environmental
conditions such as the Satonda Lake for conservation purposes.
Objectives:
The purpose of this project is to explore the biodiversity of phytoplankton in Lake Satonda and to know
the ecology of Lake Satonda based on the diversity of phytoplankton and nutrients related to
phytoplankton life.
Methodologies
Exploration will be repeated 3 times per station every month. Start from June to August 2021.
Phytoplankton sample will be taken by van dorm water sample at 3 point depth in every station: 1 m, 5
m, and 10 m. The water sample is filtered by phytoplankton net with 20 µm size. The water filtered will
be put into a 100 ml bottle in every point sample and preserved by Lugol 0.5 ml. The analysis of taxa will
be identified by a microscope in the laboratory. Physical factors like temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, pH,
and salinity will be measured in situ. Nutrient factors like nitrate, nitrite, and silicate will be analyzed in a
chemistry laboratory. The analysis of data will be using qualitative and quantitative methods to explain
phytoplankton and their ecology in the lake.
Metrics:
The results of this project are measured from the level of species diversity in Lake Satonda and the
publication of the results of this project is disseminated to the community, government, conservationists,
and academia.
Uniqueness :
Lake Satonda is a volcanic lake and has a unique character. ecosystems in lakes such as marine
ecosystems with high carbonate and salinity in ancient times. The results of phytoplankton research in
this lake will be important information for academics and conservationists.
Story Potential :
This project has a very strong appeal to the media because Lake Satonda is a lake with unique
characteristics and is located in the area of Mount Tambora. Mountains that have been designated as a
cultural heritage by UNESCO. In addition, the educational value is quite high because it introduces a

10 / 18
unique ecosystem and the potential for the discovery of new species.
Scientific/Technical Publication:
Publications are carried out in 3 publication models: 1. Publications to international journals, namely:
Journal of Biodiversity and Environmental Sciences
2. Publication in the form of a pocketbook containing phytoplankton species and their ecology in Satonda
Lake.
3. Publications using social media such as Instagram or Twitter introduce unique phytoplankton species
found in Lake Satonda

Ethical Concerns:

Please describe any potential ethical issues that you anticipate could arise as a result of the proposed
project/expedition, and how you plan to address these concerns. (100 word max)

To solve ethical problems, we will take care of a research permit in the Satonda area that is issued by the
National Park Hall there. Arrangement of research permits and letters is carried out when conducting a
survey of the research location.

U.S. Treasury Department Office of Foreign Asset Controls (OFAC) Requirements:

Expeditions in OFAC-embargoed countries (which as of 6/2020 are the Balkans, Belarus, Burma, Cote
D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, North Korea, Sudan, Syria,
and Zimbabwe) are prohibited unless (1) a general license is issued by the U.S. Treasury Department’s
Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) authorizing a scientific expedition and/or research project to be
conducted in that country, or, (2) a specific license for that country is obtained in advance from OFAC.
You can find more information regarding OFAC licensing requirements at: www.treasury.gov/resource-
center, and should consult with your attorney to ensure that you secure the appropriate OFAC license if
your project includes work in one of the embargoed countries. If your expedition includes entry into any
of the embargoed countries, you are required to submit to The Explorers Club a copy of the specific OFAC
license and/or information regarding the general OFAC license that authorizes your travel. In addition,
you will be required to provide a certification and documentation to The Explorers Club that neither the
proposed activities nor the duration of your expedition into such embargoed country will exceed the
terms of the OFAC license for such country, including any activity restrictions or expiration date listed on
the specific license.
