DESIGN CALCULATION

1. DESIGN PRESSURE (p) = gh

= 1100 x 9.81 x 3.0 x 10-6
= 0.0324 MPa

2. CALCULATION OF DESIGN FACTOR (K)

K = 3 K1K2K3K4 K5 [Refer Eq. (1) Page No11]

Depending upon the operating conditions the following values are taken
K1 = 1.5 (For Hand Layup)
K2 = 1.2 (Factor for Long Term Behaviors)
K3 = 1.1 (Effect of design temperature and resin HDT)
K4 = 1.1 (Effect of cyclic loading)
K5 = 1.5 (Factor Related to Curing)
K = 3 x 1.5 x 1.2 x 1.1 x 1.1 x 1.5
= 9.8 =10

3. CALCULATION OF DESIGN UNIT LOAD OF LAMINATE

3.1 Calculation of allowable load based on stress

UL(CSM) = UTUS(CSM) / K [Refer Eq. (2) Page No14]

= 200/ 10
= 20 N/mm per kg/m2 of glass

UL(WR) = UTUS(WR) / K
= 250/ 10
= 25 N/mm per kg/m2 of glass

UTUS = Ultimate tensile unit strength in N/mm width per kg/m2 glass
(UTUS for CSM & WR is taken from Table 5 page 10)

3.2 Calculation of allowable load based on strains

US(CSM) = X(CSM) x ed [ed =0.23% for polyester resin]
=14000 x 0.002
=28 N/mm per kg/m2 of glass

US(WR) = X(WR) x ed
=16000 x 0.002
=32 N/mm per kg/m2 of glass

X = Unit modulus in N/mm width per kg/m2 glass

(X for CSM & WR is taken from Table 5 page 10)

3.3 Selection of minimum unit load

For CSM , U = UL (Since UL < US)

=20 N/mm per kg/m2 of glass

For WR , U = UL (Since UL < US)

=25 N/mm per kg/m2 of glass

2
3.4 Calculation of Strain for minimum unit load (e)

e(CSM) = 20 / 14000
= 0.00143

e(WR) = 25 / 16000
= 0.00156

3.5 Selection of least strain(el)

The least strain = minimum of e(CSM) & e(WR)

= 0.00143

3.6 Calculation of Design Unit Load

Uz(CSM) = X(CSM) x el [ Refer Eq (5) Page No :14]

=14000 x 0.00143
=20 N/mm per Kg/m2 of glass

Uz(WR) = X(WR) x el
=16000 x 0.00143
= 22.9 N/mm per Kg/m2 of glass

4. CALCULATION OF CIRCUMFERENTIAL LOAD

Circumferential Load( Q)

Q = PDi/2 [ Refer Eq (7) Page No :23]

= (0.0324 * 2000) /2
= 32.0 N/mm

5. SELECTION OF SHELL THICKNESS

A thickness of 8.0 mm is selected with the following layers.

CSM 450 : 4 Layers
WR 610 : 4 Layers

For design validation, Sum (uzmznz) > Q [Refer Eq (6) Page No :16]

Sum (uzmznz) = (20*0.450*4) + (22.9*0.610*4)

3
= 91.8
Sum (uzmznz) = 91.9 > 32

Hence the design is OK.
