Intercultural communication skills for international students:

My Experience

Intercultural communication skills for international students is a module set by Coventry

University to their international students in level two of the first year. Now that the
course has come to the end, I am supposed to write my experience and knowledge that
I have learnt from the entire course. This course has helped me a lot in gaining the
information and knowledge about the United Kingdom`s culture, diversity, literature and
media as well as it has helped me to enhance my communication skills too. It was very
fun and practical module to learn since there was various activities that I did such as ice
breaking games, presentation, speech, assignments, and online courses as well.
Being a fun loving person, I have played so many games in my childhood. But after
being a grown up man I played a game for the first time. It was our ice breaking session
and our tutor managed to involve all of the students from my class to play a guessing
game called “What am I?” It was very interesting game because of the way it was
played. Our teacher selected a player and that person selected a card. Similarly, the
tutor revealed the card to all but the participant. The player had to ask questions yes or
no, to seek and figure out what they are. The majority of them all respond those
questions before at last they can guess who or what they are. After playing this game, I
got chance to little bit enhance my guessing ability at the same time my childhood days
was recurred.
The class ran smoothly for a week or so until the global pandemic thing happened and
our college decided to close before two days the government imposed the nationwide
lockdown. I came back to my hometown and our online classes started. I was really
confused and worried at the same time because I was not sure about what the online
classes outcome is going to be, since I have never took any of the online classes ever
in my life before. It took couple of days to adjust with the online classes but I get used to
it afterwards. In fact, I really enjoyed taking classes from home. I could lie on bed, eat
and chill and take class at the same time. Once I missed my online session due to some
work and I got chance to watch the recorded version and updated my study. I can say
this is the ultimate perk of having the online classes. In addition, I say that the overall
online sessions was good enough and it was very fruitful to increase my knowledge.
This course helped me to revise the geographical diversity of Nepal that I studied long
time ago. I got chance to re-memorize it all again. Alongside this, Diversity in the United
Kingdom has also been discussed in relation to factors such as geography, flag,
government, currency, education and BREXIT. I have never been so curious to know
about one's society and culture. In addition, the relationship history between the UK and
Nepal has also been discussed. I got to know about the friendship between the UK and
Nepal is more than 200 years old. Similarly, I also got to know about the treaties signed
between two countries and the great role that our GURKHA soldier has played in the
UK. As so, I perceived that UK is the first country to establish its embassy in Nepal and
UK is the Nepal`s top development partner only after taking this course.
Moreover, I also got great opportunity to learn briefly about the British television, radio
and the print media. I got information how the Before this, I was only aware about few of
the British TV shows and print media but now I knew that there are a lot more TV
channels, shows, newspapers and magazines. The history of the radio is also very old
in the UK. I did an assignment named personal experience with the British media after
completing the topic British media in which I compared British`s and Nepal`s media.
Due to which I got to know more about the differences their history, technology and
evolution. Similarly, being a musician I really enjoyed the topic British Music. I have a lot
of information about the music however, after completing this topic the more information
was added to my memory.
As a mid-term, I gave a presentation on topic of my choice that was Artificial
Intelligence: A boon or bane? I was used to with the traditional way of giving a
presentation and because of the lockdown situation and online class happening every
day, this time I gave an online presentation. Thanks to the great technology. It was a
very nice experience as I felt confident and calm while presenting my topic. The benefit I
had while giving an online presentation was not having the fear of speaking before
audience at the same time it had a disadvantage of not getting chance to overcome the
fear of public speaking. I got good feedback from the tutor and my friends and I was
happy that all if them were very supportive however, I was not satisfied enough with my
presentation as I could give better after practicing it even more.
After every task i have completed either it was assignments or games, class lectures or
future learn courses, has added a lot of value, experience as well as knowledge in my
life. Each activities discretely had a role of boosting the consciousness and skills in me.
Nevertheless, this course has taught me to make better communication and interaction
with people or group. This particular module has also helped me building my confidence
and this is the main thing that will lead me to my. success. I can never thank enough to
my tutor Mr. Rajendra Singh for the continuous guidance, help and support.

To conclude, I will say that this course has helped me refine myself and it was overall a
great experience.
