Gemstones used for Jewelry

A gemstone is a piece of mineral crystal which, in cut and polished form and
used to make jewelry or other adornments. Certain rocks and organic materials that are
not minerals are also used for jewelry and often considered to be gemstones as well.
How is the crystal formed from gemstones to make jewelry? Is it beneficial or harmful to
man or both? If it is something harmful, what can be done to avoid its formation? If it is
something beneficial, how can its formation be promoted? Learning about mineral
crystallization and the geological processes involved in gem formation will help us
understand some of the properties we will encounter in gemstones.

Most minerals on Earth are formed when magma rises from the depths of the
planet to the surface and then cools. Crystals form from chemical elements present in
the liquid rock. The structure of some minerals changes under high pressures or high
temperatures and produced new kinds of minerals in the process. Many minerals have
been discovered and most of them combine to form rocks like the quartz, mica and
feldspar found in granite. The rarest rock may be turned into jewelry where the most
highly prized gems are called diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald. Most gemstones
are formed in Earth’s crust in depth of 3 to 25 miles and only two gem varieties are
formed in mantle which known as diamond and peridot. A few gemstones formed in
mantle and all gems are mined in the crust. The crust is made up of three types of rock
known as igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock. These three types of rocks refer
to the way how the rock is formed.

Igneous refers to the solidification of magma. Magma from the mantle rises to the
crust through volcanic pipes. It reaches the surface of Earth and solidifies as lava and if
magmatic cools slowly in crust, it can crystallize and form minerals. Some minerals
formed in igneous process are diamonds, topaz and all quartz. When igneous rock
reaches the surface of Earth forces of erosion and weathering produce smaller particles
and accumulate forces moved by wind and water. As time goes by, layers of these
sediments build up on land or underwater. Pressure from the upper layers causes
compaction in lower layers and along with various chemical and physical changes
somewhat like lithification, which lead to the creation of sedimentary rock. Gemstones
associated with sedimentary rock include jasper, malachite, opal and zircon. Contact
metamorphism or regional metamorphism puts igneous, sedimentary rock and minerals
under heat or pressure and cause changes in chemical structure this results to the
creation of metamorphic rock. Some gemstones that are metamorphic include spinel,
ruby, and sapphire. Igneous rock can change into metamorphic and igneous rock.
Metamorphic rock can change into igneous and sedimentary but it takes much longer.
Gemstones are both beneficial as well as harmful to man. Gemstones have been
the center of attraction for humans. They said that “Beauty is not the only reason to
invest in a precious gemstones” it also goes beyond physical attributes , despite
superstitions and legends associated with gemstones a lot of scientific backing and
research vouch for their benefits. Many believed in the cosmic powers of gemstones
accordingly modern scientists have try to study the impact of cosmic energy emitted by
celestial bodies on gemstones. Astrology said that gemstone allows cosmic rays to
enter your body and system to cause positive effects. Gemstones are beyond any doubt
one of the most powerful devices using for remedies in Astrology. Their use is valid with
the help of ancient histories. Which clearly indicates that gemstone was widely using in
ancient times. Kings, queens, and emperors used to adopt these precious gemstones
for gaining astrological benefits and to complement their overall appearance and to the
present day, people adore wearing precious gemstones in the form of different jewelry
items.

Gemstones are formed through igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary process.

An igneous rock may be turn into metamorphic and sedimentary. A metamorphic rock
can become a sedimentary or igneous rock but it takes much longer. Gemstones are
formed when magma rises from the depths of planet to the surface of Earth and cools.
Gemstones are both beneficial and harmful to us in many different ways.
