1. Identify which of the following arguments are strong and which are weak.

a) This lovely china plate is similar in size, weight, and composition to the one I just
dropped. The one I just dropped broke. So, if I drop this lovely china plate, it will break.

b) Ninety percent of the cars in the parking lot were vandalized, and your car was in the
parking lot. Therefore, your car was vandalized.

c) All teachers whom I met in the college are knowledgeable. John is a teacher in the
college. So, John is knowledgeable.

Identify the informal fallacies in the following scenarios. 


 
2. Judge: You say you’re innocent, yet five people swore they saw you steal the watch. 
Defendant: Your honour, I can produce 500 people who didn’t see me steal it. 
 
 
3. Police detective: Did you get a good look at the bank robber? 
Witness: Yes, I saw his face clearly. It was Peter, the night watchman. 
Police detective: And were you also able to recognize his voice? 
Witness: No, I couldn’t really hear what he said very well. His voice was muffled by the full
ski mask he wore. 
 

4. Academic survey shows that Oriental Daily is the best seller of newspaper in Hong Kong. So,
this should be the best newspaper in Hong Kong.
