Students will work in groups of 3 to build models of 3 crystal structures using a 100mm cube of Styrofoam. They must carve out the simple cubic structure with green atoms, the face-centered cubic with blue atoms, and the body-centered cubic with green atoms, making sure all atoms and partial atoms are intact. Assignment 1 – CLOSE PACKED STRUCTURE MODEL
Due date: Completed Models, Week 7, Semester 2, 2020.
Using a 100mmx100mmx100mm cube, preferably of Styrofoam, STUDENT IN GROUPS OF 3 will
be required to carve out or create the three Close Packed Unit Structures so that all the atoms
and part atoms are intact.
1. Simple Cubic Unit Structure – Outside surface of the atoms only to be colored Green.

2. Face Centered Cubic Structure - Outside surface of the atoms only to be colored Blue

3. Body Centered Cubic Structure - Outside surface of the atoms only to be colored Green

NOTE: The sectioned surfaces to remain white in color.


Use your creativity and spatial vision to carve out the model.
