Eng. 102: Teaching English in Elementary Grades thru Literature
1st Semester of A.Y. 2020-2021

Course Description Credit Units: 3

This course will focus on Children’s Literature in English to include riddles, poetry,
stories, drama, and other written works as an avenue to teach English language. Teaching
methodologies in the use of literature shall be emphasized. This course provides opportunities
to read, enjoy, and discuss a wide variety of children’s books and to become familiar with
various educational issues relating to the use of trade books in elementary classrooms. A
variety of teaching strategies will be explored that will enhance the effective use of children’s
literature in the classroom. Students will also become familiar with the resources available to
help them select, evaluate, and utilize books. Special emphasis will be placed on developing
personal understandings of how children’s literature can be used to foster awareness,
compassion, and insights into interpersonal relationships, cultural differences, and social
justice.

Course Outcomes
A. The students are able to teach language through literature using diverse strategies.
B. The students are able to stimulate interest in the extensive reading of literature.
C. The students are able to organize collaborative and interactive tasks that facilitate language
learning through literature.
D. The students are able to describe the various genre of literature and tell what is unique to
each genre.
E. The students are able to demonstrate how to create a book trailer to integrate technology
into reading and writing.

Course Requirements
Prerequisites: College Level Reading and Writing Requirements. Students will need strong,
college-level reading, writing, and study skills to succeed in this course. Students are expected to
read approximately 20 resource children’s book, and may be obliged to write analysis, essays and
reflections.

Course Assignments: This course requires the completion of two exams covering course material
over the semester, accomplished online teaching demonstrations, workshops activities, analysis and
quizzes covering assigned module lessons.
