Activity Activity 1: The teacher flashes pictures of selections which the students guess
its type. (Materials are attached below.)

Activity 2: Matching: The teacher gives metacards containing the words from
literary genres of the 21st century and earlier periods. They match the terms
which have similarities either in elements, structures or traditions.

Analysis Based on the given activity above, the students answer the following
questions:
1. What did you feel about the activity?
2. How did you categorize the terms?
3. What are the 21st literary genres and the earlier genres?
4. What are the similarities and differences of the genres, particularly on their
elements, structures and traditions?

Abstraction The teacher may discuss the terms below for deepening:

literary elements - refers to particular identifiable characteristics of a whole text.

They are not “used,” per se, by authors; they represent the elements of storytelling
which are common to all literary and narrative forms. For example, every story has a
theme, every story has a setting, every story has a conflict, every story is written from
a particular point-of-view, etc. In order to be discussed legitimately as part of a textual
analysis, literary elements must be specifically identified for that particular text.

literary traditions - it is a collection of works that have an underlying

interconnectedness and coherence that makes them more than simply a group of
works sharing geography or group. Irish poetry and drama, for example, extend over
several centuries, involving writers with a range of voices and preoccupations; and yet
it is often thought that t hey are distinctively "Irish." This means that you can have
someone who doesn't come from Ireland, perhaps doesn't even have Irish ancestors,
but they can write in the Irish Literary Tradition because they will draw on the same
references, structure, mythology, focal points for cultural meanings and historical
moments.

Application The students are grouped into 3. One group is assigned to compare and
contrast the elements; the other group the structures; the third group the
traditions. They choose one literature from the 21st century and one from the
earlier genres to compare and contrast using a Venn diagram. The
presentation of the output can vary other than reporting.

Note to the teacher: The teacher provides selection for each group from
learning competency number 22 as basis for the comparison.

Assessment The application may also serve as assessment. The Venn diagram will be rated
by point system. The presentation could be rated based on delivery.
Assignment/Agreement Write a reflection on today's topic.
