Requirements
Professional competency in this content area must be demonstrated by one of the following pathways:
A. Documented evidence from an accepted, regionally accredited college or university indicating completion of 24
semester hours of college level coursework that meet the minimum requirement in each of the areas listed below. This
may include a maximum of six semester hours of documented professional development or work experience.
OR
B. Hold a bachelor’s or higher degree in Visual Arts.
OR
C. A passing score on one (1) of the following Visual Arts content exams: (Check one option below and upload a copy of
your official score report)
PRAXIS #5135 / 158 or higher
PLACE #28 / 220 or higher
The last administration for all PLACE exams was on May 6, 2017 and will be accepted until May 6, 2022.

Art History (6 semester hours)
Any Art History class, World Art, Survey of Art History,
Eastern Art, African Art, Women Artists, Oceanic Art,
European Art, etc.
3 semester hours must be in 21st Century/Contemporary
art i.e., Art of the 21st century, Contemporary Art

Theory and Philosophy of Art Education

(3 semester hours)
Introduction to Art Education, Theory and Philosophy,
Concepts in Art Education, Issues and Practices in Art,
Foundations in Art Education, Clinical Experience in Art
Education, Art Methods (elementary or secondary)
