ASHURAN HYDRO POWER PROJECT (1.

2 megawatts)

Initially constructed by the then Sarhad Hydel Development Organization (SHYDO) the two Micro Hydro
Power Stations in Kalam; the 200kW at Jungle Inn and the 400 kW at Ashuran MHPs became
dysfunctional after the catastrophic flood destroyed them in 2010.

However, with the initiative of European Union in 2013 the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and
Pakhtunkhwa Energy and Development Organization (PEDO) handed both the MHPs to Sarhad Rural
Support Programme (SRSP) for rehabilitation, up gradation and augmentation and to run them as a
social enterprise.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, Pervez Khattak and PTI Chief Imran Khan had personally attended
the ground breaking ceremony of the project in September 2013. This was part of the KP government’s
initiative to bring innovative solution to the local problems.

The Jungle Inn MHP was restored in rehabilitated in June 2014 and was upgraded to 400kW with which,
currently, approximately 1100 households and more than 50 hotels are being benefited.
The Ashuran MHP has been upgraded to 1.2 megawatts from 400kW and its construction work was
initiated on May 2014 and is in the testing phase as its civil work, transmission and installation of
turbines have already been completed. The intake structure built on river to divert water for the MHP
has been specially designed which consist of ogi structure

hotels, 37 mosques and all government buildings while from Pishmal upto Ushu strip of more than 14
km area will be completely covered with the 400kW surplus electricity.

A formal inauguration of the Ashuran MHP is to be held later which will be participated by European
Union and senior government officials. The Peace Project has taken a major initiative to tap into the
water potential of Malakand Division and the PEDO-funded project will impact lives in large parts of the
geographically vast and undeveloped area.
