Name of work: Construction of Lift Irrigation Scheme near Devathkal Village Lifting

water from Devapur nala to Siddapur sub Distributory of HBC.

1. Introduction: Devathkal LIS

The Hunasigi Branch canal (HBC) offtakes at Ch 35.53 km of NLBC main canal with a
Design discharge of 550 Cusecs. The total ICA of HBC is 22,109 ha. This HBC is feeding the
water to Siddapur distributary (Dy-5 of HBC) off taking at chainage 8.69 km of HBC having
a design discharge capacity of 330 Cusecs and the ICA of Siddapur distributary is 15,540
Ha.
The Siddapur Distributary is Having a 'Y' junction, at chainage 23.41 km. The canal
Discharge at this Y Junction Location is 120 cusecs and the further ICA beyond Y-junction
is 6067 Ha . From this Y-junction the right limb runs to a length of 40 Kms which Irrigates
3567 Ha and the left limb runs to length of 12 Kms and irrigates 2500 Ha.
The total command area beyond the Y-junction is being 6067 ha and this reach of canal is
facing acute shortage of water for Irrigation. It is observed that, though the irrigation facility
has been provided since more than 20 years users have been deprived of water for irrigation
beyond the Y-Junction even the command area is declared under the said distributaries. This
is due to and Higher Transmission Losses and also due to Excess use of water for irrigation
by the stake holders on upper reaches of Canal. Therefore, it is proposed to augment this
shortage of water by lifting of 62 Cusecs of water to Y-Junction through Devathkal lift
irrigation scheme in order to make good of the shortfall in supply water for irrigation.
From Devapur to Hunasagi road at 12.50 Km from Devapur and at a distance of about 2 KM
from the main road there is a natural Devapur nala with sufficient water flow from the upper
irrigation commands. It is identified that, about more than 5.00 Cumecs of water is flowing
through this Devapur nala even during the summer. Due to the continuous agitation and
demand from the farmers of deprived irrigation facilities and also from the elected
representatives it is proposed to utilize this water flowing in nala to make good of the
shortfall in declared ICA of the Siddapur distributary as stated above. Hence this Devathkal
lift Irrigation has been proposed to feed the water to this suffering atchkat of about 3100 ha.
Devathkal lift Irrigation scheme envisages by lifting 1.75 Cumecs (62 Cusecs) of water from
Devapur nala.
In this Regard, the Hon’ble MLA of Shorapur Taluka addressed a letter to the Hon’ble Water
Resource Minister, GOK with a request to provide irrigation facilities to the proposed area by
Construction of Bridge Cum Barrage across Devapur Nala near Devathkal Village. It is
Proposed to lift the water from Devapur Nala through MS Rising Main pipe line for a length
of about 4.30 Kms to feed the water to Siddapur distributary at Ch.22.47 Km before Y-
junction through delivery chamber-1.
The Distributary no-5 of NLBC offtakes at Ch.41.39 km which irrigates 4,950 Ha and the
discharge is 100 Cusecs. The Bilapura Thanda sub distributary (BTSD) offtakes at Ch:4.297
Km which irrigates 1850 Ha and the discharge is 35.00 Cusecs. This sub distributary is also
not getting required discharge at the tail end reaches, hence about 600 Ha of notified land is
being a suffering atchkat.
To extend irrigation facility to this suffering atchkat 2nd Lift is proposed from DC-1 of 1st
Stage. A Sump cum Pump house is proposed at Delivery chamber-1 and second lift is
proposed to Lift water through MS rising Main pipe line for a length of about 8.50 Kms to
the Bilapura Thanda sub distributary (BTSD) through a delivery chamber-2. The proposed
ICA is the suffering ICA of Siddapur & Bilapura Thanda sub distributary of NLBC in
Devathkal village of Shorapur taluka of Yadgir District.

2. Water availability
The water required for the scheme is proposed to utilise by impounding water by constructing
a barrage across Devapur nala near Devathkal village. The waste water that gets drained off
from the valleys in the command area NLBC Distributory No. 3 to 12 and HBC & its
Distributaries From 1 to 6. Further the runoff from the valleys connecting the Devapur nala
on the upstream of the proposed Barrage will also contribute certain amount of water for the
proposed project. Therefore, the water available is by rejuvenation of waste water that gets
impounded at the proposed barrage Location and from the runoff of the Devapur nala.
The proposed scheme is designed for providing Irrigation facility to 3100 Ha of land by
lifting water from the impounded water at the proposed barrage. The irrigation intensity
adopted for the irrigation is 90% and crops selected for irrigation are the crops approved in
the approved Project report of the UKP.

110/33/11kv KPTCL substation and 33kv single circuit line with coyote ACSR conductor for
a length of 20km is provided. All materials required for lift are made in the estimate.
Stage-2
The total power requirement for the scheme is 1.5 MVA(Stage-2). The power requirement is
calculated taking into account of no. of working pumps (2 working + 1 for achieving peak
discharge) and auxiliary power supply.
2 x 1.50 MVA 11/0.433kv 1w+1s power transformer with 11kv terminal bay at Shorapur
110/33/11kv KPTCL substation and 11kv single circuit line with rabbit ACSR conductor for a
length of 25km is provided. All materials required for lift are made in the estimate.

Power Supply to Jack well cum pump house

The power supply required for the scheme is considered from the Shorapur, 33 KV KPTCL

9. Estimation and Costing

Total estimated cost for various components of work envisaged for implementation of
Devathkal LIS scheme to provide irrigation facility to 3100 Ha of land based on detailed
planning, designs and estimates works out to 90.30 Crores. The cost estimates are based on
schedule of rates of PWD Common SR, Vol-1, Vol-2, Vol-3, Vol-4, Vol-5 & Vol-6 ,
Karnataka for the year 2021-22 SR. For items where market rates are considered, such rates
are obtained from various vendors to arrive at a reasonably lowest cost.

10. Summary and conclusion

The requirement of water (0.587 TMC) for 120 days 22 hr pumping is for utilization is
being the excess waste water flowing in the nala from the upstream command area of the
same project. Though the proposed ICA of 3100 Ha is notified command area under the
project is suffering from irrigation facility from long time. The proposed area is being
drought prone and deprived of irrigation facility. Hence the above project is proposed for
implementation to stabilize the existing canal network to feed water to the suffering atchkat.
By the implementation of this project, suffering ICA of 3100 Ha will get irrigation facility
thereby increasing the socio-economic status of farmers in the command area and also the
long-term sustainability of livelihood of the area.
