Renaissance Period

# General Effects of Renaissance Period:


 City was a dukedom province with healthy merchants.
 Roman classical heritage returned into the cities.
 Palaces were built by upper classes.
 Building and structures were decorated with roman classical concepts.
 Participation of church became centered at the Vatican Palace.
 Art and creativity became a profession.
 Multi-dimensional profession at a single person began (Leonardo de Vinci)

# Effects on City Planning:


 Concept of monarchy developed as-
 Kings were monarchs (France)
 Wealthy merchants were dukes (Italy)
 Large landowners were lord barons (England)
 Concept of monumentalism developed as-
 Formal plazas
became enclosed
with monuments.
 Monuments were
everywhere.
 Axis and centerline
system planning
symbolized the
growing
concentration of
power.
 Space formed with
designers and planners.
 Long range artillery concept came and city wall removed.
 Open spaces were surrounded the city.
 New towns were found in which the central and the most dominating buildings were those of the nobles
(Versailles in France, Canberra in Australia and Washington D.C. in U.S.A.).
 In the old medieval towns that existed, development was done in the designing of the public congregation
places like squares, piazzas (The piazza of St. Marks, Vience, and Piazza of St. Peters).

The Baroque City

# General Concepts:
 Sign of the axial system planning which was introduced by Lorenzo
Bernini during the renaissance period.
 Baroque means decorated style or designed and this city developed at
18th century at Europe.
 Palaces were the focal points and the symbol of reality.
 Plaza became extended and continued with the others with colonnades
and tree lined avenue.
 The main features of baroque planning were as-
 Avenues
 Fountains
 Axis and Example: The shone Brunn palace at Germany where the sides of the trees
 Geometry
were also chopped off along the road to achieve the „axis‟ of the design.

# Building Regulations:
 Due to hazards of overhanging upper stories, building ordinance of 1619 ruled to construct walls vertically
from the foundation to roof.
 Rules were used for upper classes to build formal buildings.

# Problems in Towns:
 Formalism of Baroque city and Renaissance period had no effects on people’s life.
 Towns had congested urban population with degraded environment, problems of water supply, sanitation,
sewers, water supply, drainages.
 Epidemic diseases and poverty spread out.

# Revolution began and Baroque city gone to history.
