IR CLASS 3 Procedure Turn (course

reversal)
-maneuver prescribed when it is
Box method of interception necessary
-mostly used when intercepting radials
close to/more than 180 deg from your >Steps
current position 1. Turn 45 deg away from course
a)turn left (std)(-45)
>Steps in Box Method of Interception b)turn right (non-std +45)
1. Determine Pos
OUTBOUND 2. Establish on NEW Hdg start time 1
1. ) determine pos minute
2. ) Set VOR & determine if radial close
to more than 180 deg 3. Twist VOR radial to the bottom
a) Turn to outbound heading and
fly parallel 4. After 1 min, turn to heading
b) Wait for the flag change OPPOSITE of NEW HEADING
c) Start time for 1 min (outbound) a) turn right (std)
[shorter than inbound] b) left (non-std)
d) Intercept outbound normally
!!! 250 on top, add *insert angle*(45) = 5. Intercept inbound (turn with last
295 and then intercept turning direction)

INBOUND *last turns are opposite to the orginal

1) determine pos turn.
2) Set VOR & determine if radial close
to more than 180 deg * 3 T’s = Turn, Time, Twist
2. ) inbound boxing (Track out)
a) Turn to inbound heading and *For inbound turns (the last turn)
fly parallel !! Standard turns = all turns to the
b) Wait for the flag change RIGHT
c) Start time for 2 min (inbound) !! Nonstd turns = all turns to the LEFT
[longer than outbound] !!!
d) Intercept outbound normally
!!! 070 on top, subtract *insert
angle*(45) = 025 and then intercept

DME HOLD
~Distance measuring equipment
-tells you how far you are from the
Reverse Sensing DME transmitter
-one of the VOR’s limitations -useful when doing an approach &
-flying outbound from a station w/ TO other types of instrument nav
indication of VOR and vice versa -DME hold = a hold along a radial at a
-how to counteract? awareness of VOR fixed distance from a VOR
positioning. Key to counteract reverse
sensing >Terms in the holding:
 Holding fix - start the hold (DME 5. CDI centered, twist next 10 deg
hold = the DME where you start the radial, then turn next 10 deg heading
holding)
 Abeam - abeam holding fix Correcting the Arc
!!! reaches back to original distance >When Out of the ARC
 Inbound end - the start curve -wait til CDI is centered
 Outbound end - the second curve -turn FIRST out to the next 10 deg
 2 sides - holding & non-holding -twist next 10 deg radial
side

>DME hold [no twist] [2 T’s only… !! outside arc -> increasing
turn and time]
Steps:
1. When reaching instructed DME, turn >When In of the arc
to the reciprocal from current course -CDI centered, twist VOR next 10 deg
a) RIGHT (std) -maintain current heading until desired
b) LEFT (non-std) DME is achieved
2. Monitor DME during the turn (it -turn to next 10 deg heading
would decrease and increase back)
3. When reaching instructed DME again, !!!!!!!!! Std bank angle = 15 deg
start time 1 min. !!! For the arc, Std bank angle = 3-5 deg
4. After 1 min, turn and intercept
inbound Compute roll out:
1/2 of bank ==> angle to roll out
>DME Arc Ex. 15 ->
- procedure used to transition from
enroute environment to an instrument
approach
-not particularly diff procedure, diff to
explain
-we’ll need DME, so if a/c has no DME,
this wont apply to you

-always remember the basic concept of

the ARC:
Intercept every 10 deg radial by 90
deg intercept angle

!!one radial to another without

disrupting DME

>Steps in doing a DME arc

1. Set the VOR to the next 10 deg radial
to intercept
2. Determine the 90 deg heading to
intercept
3. Start turn 0.7 miles before the target
DME
4. Establish on the arc, wait for CDI to
center
