10. Course overview:
This module abridges all the general information students need to guide them during the
third stage of their selected course at department of Petroleum Geoscience at Soran
University. This brochure also designates in details the content of Drilling and Production
Technology course, the names of academic staff who will teach the course, and what
students will be likely to do to make indisputable their success in this unit. We hope students
enjoy the unit and that students will find the work inspiring and challenging.
This course covers topics associated with the equipment used for well drilling and the
preparation of components which makeup a drilling well plan. Topics include equipment and
techniques for conventional well drilling, provincial regulator roles and responsibilities,
drillbit types and applications, drilling fluid systems and calculations associated with drilling
fluid properties, well casing design, cementing requirements for well casing and/or
abandonment, well control theory, techniques, and procedures. Some of the commonly
used equipment, techniques, and drilling applications associated with directional or
horizontal wells and underbalanced coiled tubing drilled wells shall also be reviewed.
Good attendance at lectures and tutorials is important to give students a good basis for work
throughout the course. If any students may experience difficulty with this unit, is important
to sort things out as soon as possible.
11. Course objective:
To give the professional junior students the necessary understanding of the processes used
during drilling operations. To learn some of the techniques, systems and equipment used in
the process.
It focuses on the concept of effective well construction, and aims to develop high levels of
professional skill in the key areas of well design, drilling and operations management.
The aim of the course is to provide students with a broad overview of introduction to
petroleum engineering. This course covers introductions to petroleum drilling, completions

and production, reservoir mechanics, fundamentals of rock and fluid properties, composition
and PVT properties of petroleum fluids; basic physical and chemical properties of petroleum
reservoir fluids related to reservoir processes and production. It also provides an
introduction to decision-making and the petroleum business environment.
12. Student's obligation
- Students are expected to attend all class sessions. If a student misses 10% or more classes
he/she will receive “Fail or Second Term Attempt” for the course.
- Students are not allowed to enter the classroom after the instructor.
- If someone leaves the classroom during the lecture, quizzes or exams for any reason would
be not allowed to come back.
- The students will be asked to leave the classroom if she/he talks without permission or
sleep during the lecture.
- They are responsible about attending all classes, quizzes, and exams. No exception.
- There will be no make-up quizzes or exams unless they have a very valid reason approved
by the instructor.
- It shall be the general policy for this course that all work shall be graded on the basis of
answers only — partial credit, if given, is given solely at the discretion of the instructor.
- All grading shall be done by the instructor or under his direction and supervision, and the
decision of the instructor is final.
- Plagiarism is a serious academic offense. Plagiarism includes: (1) passing off the work of
others as your own; and (2) failure to acknowledge properly the source of ideas,
information, facts, figures, drawings, etc., that are not your own. You can avoid plagiarism in
the written report by properly referencing the work of others. A grade of zero (0) will be
assigned to assignments containing plagiarism.
13. Forms of teaching
The theoretical material would be transferred by power point presentation, black board,
posters, movies, etc.
The students will be examined every week for 15 minutes (quiz). The students will be asked
to do homework every week besides, two paper exams per semester. A power point
presentation (10 slides) and a report (400 words) will be another task that students will be
asked to prepare by the end of semester.
The students will be examined in practical part every week for 10 minutes and will be asked
to work within a group and write reports. Furthermore there will be two general paper
exams.

The practical material will be transferred by brief presentation. Considerable attention is
devoted to correcting drilling fluid properties and controlling filter cake quality. This
eliminates many seen and unseen obstacles for drilling trouble-free hole as cheaply as
possible. This involves proper drilling fluid processing in the surface tanks.
The practical topics will be covered by covering the skills that students need to work
proficiently in the rig site.
