A Contextualized Learning Resource Material in Science 6

(Demonstrating Rotation and Revolution of Earth)

JUNRIL C. BUTAL - Agusan Del Sur

PRELYN P. SANDIMAS - Cabadbaran City
CAMILA A. ORCINO - Bislig City
COMPETENCY: Demonstrate
rotation and revolution of the
earth using a globe to explain
day and night and the sequence
of seasons (S6ESIVe-f-5)

2
The Earth moves in three ways.
1. Rotates or spins like a top
2. Travels around the sun
3. Moves through the Milky Way Galaxy with
3.Moves through the Milky Way Galaxy with
the rest of the planets in the Solar System.
the rest of the planets in the Solar System.
Rotation is the movement of Earth on its axis
Rotation is the movement of Earth on its axis
Revolution is the movement of Earth around the sun.
Revolution is the movement of Earth around the sun.

Rotation is the movement of Earth on its axis

Revolution is the movement of Earth around the sun.

Earth completes its rotation once every 24 hours.

Earth completes one revolution in 365 ¼ days.

Revolution is the movement of Earth around the sun.

3
The Earth orbits
around the sun

The sun appears

to rise in the east
and set in the west

The earth spins

on its axis

The seasons change

as the earth orbits
around the sun

FIND OUT:
The movements of the Earth and its effects

YOU NEED THIS:

DO THIS:

1. Create groups of 4 and give each group with these materials:

a. Number each pupil in the group with 1,2,3 or 4

i. Pupil #2 selects a styroball and holds it in front of him/her.

ii. Pupil #1 makes a chart and writes the size of the styroball on the chart.
iii. Pupil #3 turns on the flashlight and shines it on the styroball holding it
about 8 inches from the sphere.

2. The group will observe the styroball to determine about how much of the sphere is lighted.
3. Then they will make estimations and pupil #1 will records it on the chart.
a. Whole sphere, half the sphere, just a slice of the sphere, etc.
4. Pupil #4 holds up the second styroball and the group will repeat the activity.
a. Put the styroballs back in the bag.
5. The group will then discuss why they think that much of the styroball was lighted by the
flashlight.

THINK OF THIS:

1. Based on the activity, what did you find out?

_____________________________________________________________
2. Why do you think this occurred?
__________________________________________________________________
3. Do you think the same thing will happen with a globe? Why or why not?
___________________________________________________________________
4. (Do the activity again using the given globe) Did it get the same results with the globe?
Why or why not?
___________________________________________________________________
5. Turn your globe so the Philippines facing the sun.
a. What do you notice?
_________________________________________________________________
b. Don’t move the globe, but look at it and tell me about the countries on the other
side of the Earth?
_________________________________________________________________
c. What about at the edges where it is just fading into the darkness?
__________________________________________________________________
d. When will the other side of the Earth have daylight?

FIND OUT: The movements of the earth.

USE THIS: Lamp

Wrap Around Map (see attached map)
DO THIS:
1. Wrap the map around the waist of the pupils.
2. Turn on the lamp and have the pupils form a circle around the lamp with their backs
at the lamp.
3. In the tune of “Sisira ang Bulaklak”, the pupils will move around in the right
direction (counterclockwise).
4. With these lines of the song “Bomtiyaya Bomtiyaya Bom Yee Yee” tell the pupils to
turn around in place.
5. Upon the last word of the song, the pupils will identify the parts of the map that faces
the lamp and the parts that opposes the light.

THINK OF THIS:
1. What are the movements of the Earth shown in the activity?
_____________________________________________________
2. On the first rotation, what countries on the map faces the lamp? opposes the lamp?
__________________________________________________________________
3. What phenomenon is shown in this activity?
__________________________________________________________________
4. How is rotation affects day and night?
___________________________________________________________________
5. How is revolution affects the amount of light a place receives? What is its effect on
the area?
__________________________________________________________________
6. Put the Philippines in the night time position. It is now midnight in the Philippines
how long would it take for the Earth to make a complete rotation with the Philippines
returning to the position it is in now?
__________________________________________________________________

EXTEND:

What are other games that you usually play that shows the same movements of the
earth? How did you play that game?
