Chapter 2

Practical Problems
Problem 1: Calculate mean deviation for the following frequency distribution:

No. of colds experienced No. of No. of colds experienced No. of

in 12 months persons in 12 months persons
0 15 5 95
1 46 6 82
2 91 7 26
3 162 8 13
4 110 9 2

Problem 2: Compute coefficient of variation from the following table:

Weekly No. of Weekly No. of
Income Employees Income Employees
1300-1399 30 l700-l799 60
1400-1499 46 l 800-1899 50
1500-1599 58 l900-l999 20
1606-1699 76

Problem 3: The following table gives the fluctuations in the prices of shares of two
companies A and B. Find out which of them shows greater variability. Comment on the
result.
Price (in Tk.) Share A Price (in Tk.) Share B
318 2542 324 2545
322 2522 315 2530
325 2534 308 2556
312 2532 319 2530

Problem 4: Lives of two models of refrigerators in a recent survey are:

Life No. of
(No. of years) Model refrigerators Model
A B
0-2 5 2
2-4 16 7
4-6 13 12
6-8 7 19
8-10 5 9
10-12 4 1
What is the average life of each of these refrigerators? Which model has greater uniformity?
Problem 5: The mean and standard deviation of 20 items is found to be 10 and 2
respectively. At the time of checking it was found that one item 8 was incorrect. Calculate the
mean and standard deviation if item 8 was incorrect. Calculate the mean and standard
deviation if (i) the wrong item is omitted, and (ii) it is replaced by12.

Problem 6: A collar manufacturer is considering the production of new style of collar to

attract young men. The following statistics of neck circumference are available based on
measurement of a typical group:
Mid-value
(in inches) 12.5 13.0 13.5 14.0 14.5 15.0 15.5 16.0
No. of Students 4 19 30 63 66 29 18 1

Compute the arithmetic mean and standard deviation and comment on the results.
