PROBLEM BASED LEARNING: Descriptive Data

PROBLEM 1 (30%):

1) Choose one data from

https://www.dosm.gov.my/v1/index.php?r=column/ctimeseries&menu_id=NHJlaGc2Rlg4ZXlGTj
h1SU1kaWY5UT09 , under the option “Labour Force Survey (LFS) Time Series Statistics by State,
1982-2017.”
a) The data your group selects MUST NOT BE THE SAME as other groups within your tutorial
class.
b) Your data must have a sample size of at least n=15, starting from the year 2000 onwards,
where the year represents the independent variable.
c) Your data must be a comparison of there (3) different states.
d) Select only one (1) dependent variable and must be the same for all three states selected.
e) Treat your data as a discrete data.
(6 marks)
2) Your report and presentation must have
a) An introduction; A brief description in your own words of your data and variables. (2 marks)
b) Prepare an appropriate type of frequency distribution table for each state and then compute
frequencies and cumulative frequencies. (6 marks)
c) Histograms, ogive and frequency polygon for each state. (9 marks)
d) Calculation of the summary measures of each state (mean, standard deviation, quartiles,
interquartile range). (12 marks)
e) A side-by-side box-and-whisker plots for any two groups selected from the three states. (6
marks)
f) Discussion of your outcomes. Comment on any symmetry or skewness in part 2(c). Discuss
the differences in terms of possible factors that relate to the movement of the data and
conclude your findings. (5 Marks)
(total 46marks)

PROBLEM 2 (10%)

You are employed as a statistician for a company that makes household products, which are sold by
part-time salesperson who work during their spare time. The company has four salesperson employed in
a small town. Let us denote these salesperson by A, B, C and D. the sales records (in ringgit) for the past
six weeks for these four salesperson are shown in the following table.

Your supervisor has asked you to prepare a brief report comparing the sales volumes and the
consistency of sales of these four salesperson. Use the mean for each salesperson to compare the sales
volumes, and then choose an appropriate statistical measure to compare the consistency of sales.

Assume you work for OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and have complaints about
noise levels from some of the workers at a state power plant. You charge the power plant with taking
decibel readings at six different areas of the plant at a different times of the day and week. The results of
the data collection are listed. Use boxplots to initially explore with protective ear wear. The safe hearing
level is approximately 120 decibels.
